So, in short: there is not a single elected official running Italy, deregulation and tax breaks for the rich are going strong, our questionably qualified to serve congress will not (and cannot) fix anything, Athens and Rome are crumbling...and pizza is a vegetable...fuck.

It is so interesting that this article notes the discrimination between "Palestinian and Jewish residents" rather than Israeli/Palestinian, as if there are not Jewish Palestinians or the like. I wonder if this is the bus line's actual policy or something unclear to be accredited to the article. But, wow, another great action coming up. Proving yet again that just showing up/putting your ass in the seat really does speak volumes.

Yemen was perhaps the most interesting place I have ever been. Also, where I mainly lived in Sana'a was a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its city-wide matching architecture. Also, there is the village of Hoteib. This is an Ismaili pilgrimage site on the eastern side of Jebal Messar. Ismaili pilgrims come to Al Hoteib to visit the tomb of the 6th century (H) Ismaili scholar Hattem bin Ibrahim bin al Hussein al Hamadi (longest name ever?!). This place is pure magic!! Mostly because Ismailis do not wear black, and black niqab is the norm in Yemen, so the small village is an oasis of color!

And yes, I have dreamed in Arabic some. Mostly while writing my thesis where I was reading & translating lots of really old Hadith pretty much constantly. After reading one regarding the merits of marrying mer-people, I dreamed of Arabic-speaking mermaids for weeks.

I do hope to return some day, but for now I am just a lowly grant writer.

I began with University classes (University of Texas at Austin, actually) and after six semesters moved to Yemen for about 4 months. After being forced to leave in August 2009 (because of what we later found out were US led bombings) I traveled through Syria, Jordan, and the West Bank. I attribute higher level fluency to the new trend of immersion-based language learning happening all over the country, as well as the combination of language/cultural immersion in the ME.

I chose Arabic almost by accident while studying Religion and Women's and Gender Studies. Mostly, as I am a very mathematical learner, the three root system and patterned verb forms really drew me to the language, not to mention it is quite beautiful.

And currently I live in DC and work for the University of Maryland where I upkeep language through interactions with the Arabic grad. students who I interact with regularly.

I always make home made dog treats for my friends with dogs! Also, in the same vein as the soap dishes already mentioned, scrap wood can be used to make wonderful cutting boards: http://www.designsponge.com/2011/09/diy-project-homemade-cutting-boards.html

Another instance where being a brown person/having a brown person's name usurps all legitimate legal action.

I became ACTFL certified at a professional level of Arabic, obtaining "advanced high" fluency when 21 after 4 years of study. American English is my first and only other language. AMA I suppose?

it always seems that methods used in these pray-the-gay-away sort of places include gender performance modification. "throw all of those ‘lesbian clothes’ away and put her in a dress and she'll want to sleep with men and procreate and forget all about her ‘lovedebt’”!!
