I am a US citizen, I come from a military family, I spent my childhood on military bases, and I have friends in the military now. I think the gesture of buying a beer to remember a fallen soldier is very touching and appropriate. I also think there's too much misdirected hero worship in our culture and way too much vicarious bloodlust.

So yeah, mourn the dead, but also recognize that these soldiers died because our nation is engaged in unnecessary colonial war with the entire world that, in all probability, will eventually culminate in the destruction of all mankind.

That last point is kind of important, and it is worth mentioning whenever it's relevant.

It's complicated and I don't know where to begin explaining it since I don't know what assumptions you're starting from, but in a nutshell it helps assuage radical wealth disparity and it brings people out of debt slavery and back into the consumer economy.

More importantly it gives the low-wage workers who currently form a majority and yet have the least voice in politics more chance to be involved in shaping the policies that govern their lives. You can't meet, discuss, educate yourself, and organize when you're working 3 jobs and still behind on the rent.

Basically keeping citizens out of sweat shops is a sine qua non for a functioning democracy, or a democratic republic if you like that term.

There are, sadly, plenty of people in the world who want to hold unquestionable power over everyone else. Some of those people, bizarrely, try to claim such power in the name of anarchism. Of all things.

If you've ever dealt with the moderators of r/anarchism, you know exactly what Orwell was talking about when he wrote Animal Farm. Posts are censored regularly over there, they have a strict code about what words and ideas are allowed, and I think they have a larger ban list than every other subreddit put together. Many of the mods have themselves been banned in the past on one or more occasions.

I don't care about that. Why should I? I'm critiquing a bad game design element, not projecting opinion poll numbers.

There are all kinds of things that could be done to Minecraft that would be both 1) widely popular and 2) horribly bad. Adding voice acting, or a Hollywood movie tie-in, or any of a million stupid game-ruining things that would be widely praised and defended by an army of obsequious fanboys until the very moment when Notch finally admitted it was dumb and took it out again.

If and when that moment finally comes for the hunger bar, I won't even say I told you so. I'll just happily pretend the whole thing never happened.

You are right. Hunger is a poor game dynamic. It makes starting out harder, but not in a fun way. And after you're settled, it's nothing but a constant nuisance.

Every defense people still make of the hunger bar idea amounts to a reason why it's suitable for hardcore mode and nothing else.

Beyond that, it's just blind fan worship. Notch put it in so let's all love it. Sorry, but Notch makes mistakes too and the hunger bar is one of them.
