Picture from the Creation Museum. People actually buy into this. No, really. by Ninjagirlinlovein atheism

[–]hakuna_matata77 3 points4 points ago

Go to the creationism museum disguised as a dinosaur museum in Cabazon, California. You can't miss it. It's right off highway 10 in southern California in the middle of a desert and there's a gigantic dinosaur just sitting there by a gas station. It's like $5 to get in, you get to see all the crazy posters, and you get free plastic dinosaurs when you leave. You can't beat that.

How is a virus "born"? I am under the assumption that viruses are not alive, so do they reproduce? How does one come into our world? by anonymauzin askscience

No, I agree and I realize that your average virologist will say a virus isn't alive. Just wanted to point it out, as it makes an interesting thought to ponder over and thought some users would enjoy. Didn't mean to hijack your comment or anything

While I was not a straight up virology major, I did spend 2+ years doing plant virology research on CMV. While a majority of virologists might say that viruses are not "alive", there is not consensus on the issue as the definition of what constitutes life is a bit sketchy. It depends on what you consider "alive". Does life begin with self awareness? Is life defined by an ability to reproduce without the help of a host? Is life defined by an ability to pass genetic material to a future generation? Weather a virus is considered alive or not depends on how you make this distinction. I'm sure you know this all ready being a virology major but I wanted to point it out for other users.

http://serc.carleton.edu/microbelife/yellowstone/viruslive.html or any introductory text on plant or animal virology should point this out in the first chapter.

Get on the airtrain. It makes a free stop on Lefferts Blvd. There is an overpass outside of the building the airtrain lets you off on. Walk straight over that overpass towards the houses and little shops. On your right you will run into some kickass pizza places. I do not remember the particular name of the shop I'm fond of, but I believe it's the first pizza place you'll see on your right and it's right next door to a little Chinese place that sells tacos.

Anyway that's just if you're a cheapass like myself and don't want to pay the 5 bucks for the airtrain. If you don't mind, then hop on the airtrain and get off at Howard Beach. The place you get off is just literally one floor above the subway. Go downstairs and hop on the subway, go wherever you'd like. I mean, what do you want to see in NYC? Any place in particular?

Here's a map of the NYC subway lines.

Have fun and explore :D

Math Gurus - How do you visualize a complex/imaginary number? by beaverchipin AskReddit

I hope that tidbit about the ordering makes it a bit easier for you to digest complex numbers. I know when my prof first mentioned that, I stopped for a moment, and then realized that it was so obvious if I just thought about it, but for some reason I had never thought about it. We are so used to having a concept of unique ordering for the numbers we deal with that it just isn't something we consider usually.

I understand by the way about being confused or not having a default idea of complex numbers. But I think a lot of that is really just the fact that we avoid them so much until more advanced mathematics. Just jump in and learn about them and I promise you will find a lot of beautiful things from complex analysis and it will all make sense!

Sorry it took me a bit to respond... I'm just going to copy/paste what I wrote in another response:

You're right,, you can look at the modulus, but what I'm getting at is it isn't order in the same way we would consider for the real numbers. Because if you are looking at the modulus the complex numbers would break down into equivalence classes because for every possible modulus, there are an infinite number of complex numbers with that modulus - all the numbers on the circle centered at the origin with radius equal to that modulus

Perhaps I chose the wrong word to try and convey this

You just have to start seeing complex numbers as they are : points on the complex plane. Just imagine the regular 2D Euclidean plane you are used to with x and y axis, and every single point you can imagine on there represents a complex number. The same way you look at an interval on the x axis and realize that every single point possible represents a real number. Keep in mind there is no concept of "order" among them (you can not say : is j larger than z ? when j and z are both complex). I've always found its much more useful to deal with them in polar coordinats, instead of looking at z = 1 + i for example, look at z = sqrt(2)*epi/4i . (EDIT: sorry, math dumbness... I had originally written 1 as modulus but drkevorkian pointed out my mistake)

A lot of people visualize complex numbers as being vectors holding the real and imaginary part. While this is useful I think it's just a crutch. The complex plane is vast and intricate, you should get to know it as it is!

I think a lot of people have a difficult time seeing complex numbers and the complex plane right off because they are unfamiliar to us during calculus and largely ignored outside of physics in most basic mathematics courses. You just have to practice for a bit. Honestly, just spend a little bit getting used to the complex numbers and you will visualize them great.

sorry dude, it's simply not the case! It is not a matter of "evidence to the contrary", 0.999.... is simply = 1. It is a solid fact. The thing that makes this hard for people to accept I think is we get this notion of numbers as objects almost, rather than the abstract concepts they are. What is 1? it is a number, which both 0.9999.... and 1 are both valid representations of.

If you want to understand how they are equal try and think of it this way.

Imagine an open, bounded interval on the real numbers, from 0 to 1, meaning all real numbers in between but not including 0 and 1. Now, can you convince yourself that 0.99999.... is an upper bound of this interval? (upper bound meaning, if you take arbitrary element from the interval, it is less than 0.9999....) now, can you convince yourself that 1 is an upper bound of this interval? Can you convince yourself that both are least upper bounds? If you can, then realize that least upper bounds of intervals (called supremums) are unique. An interval can not have two distinct least upper bounds.

Or think of it this way... if you claim that 0.9999.... is really less than 1, then I challenge you to find me a number that is strictly greater than 0.99999..... yet strictly less than 1.

So you are lucky with your teeth. That's great but you shouldn't deny the benefits flossing has on dental health. It's not like its an old wives tale it is pretty damn easy to compare the average dental health of people who floss v. those that don't floss. And the logic behind it is pretty simple, when you floss you clean areas of your teeth that your brush doesn't really get access to
