I just adopted a 14-year-old boy in November. It is VERY challenging. You are getting a child who already has his/her basic personality set. You can help them to make better choices but you need to be ready to accept them as they are.

I was replacing an old AT power supply on my computer. Back then, I would leave the computer plugged in so I would have a ground. I left the computer plugged in not thinking about the fact I was working on a POWER SUPPLY. While trying to gently pull the wire attached to the power button, the wire contacted the metal case which I was holding with my other hand (uh-oh). The electricity caused me to grip the case and metal pliers I was holding.

My cousin just sat there watching me being electrocuted. It took very much willpower to overcome the electricity forcing the muscles in my hands to contract. After about 10 seconds I practically threw the computer across the room.

That electricity hurt.

It is very hard for a single person to adopt, at least in my community.

There are stories of singles adopting all over the country. You can do it, but be prepared for it to be a long and difficult journey.

Ignore the first "No" response. It is very difficult for those with ODD not to to say "no". It is a compulsion to oppose and defy. As they learn to work with their disorder, they will comply within a reasonable amount of time but still likely tell you "no".

Having never experienced drugs, wrong crowd, or abuse, I am unable to truly relate to him in regards to those experiences.

My situation is like that of any biological parent. He is my son. Legally he has the same rights as a biological child, including inheritance rights. Adopting him was making a life-long commitment to him to be his father.

To help people pronounce my handle correctly. It used to be "Habda" but people would say the "Ha" part like the "Ha" in "Have". The extra a makes people read and pronounce it correctly. The "Haa" makes people pronounce it like "Ah". Like Hahbda. My name isn't Hahbda because I don't like the way it looks. :)

He proudly introduces me as his Dad. The adoption may be recent but he has been living with me for over 14 months.

When you decide to adopt, your life becomes an open book. They question your neighboors, coworkers, and friends. You must be financially stable and have a clean background.

I did not request a white child. My first foster child was latino.

I didn't know for sure I would adopt him, but they wanted to know it was a high probability.

At his age and with his needs, there was much financial support from the state to ease the burden of adoption. I wwas lucky to find a lawyer to help with the adoption pro bono.

When he is in trouble, he will say anything he can think of in an attempt to hurt you with words. "I hate you" is one of the most minor things he has said in the heat of anger.
