G20 Report: Should Bill Blair resign? | Posted Toronto | National Post by masteractorin toronto

[–]guytoronto 0 points1 point ago

No.

Why? Because you can bet good money on the fact that as long as Bill Blair is in that position, this shit will never happen again. He knows that if he lets anything slide going forward, people are going to want blood.

If you fire him, and bring in someone new, they won't have that same fear.

This happened while playing on a claw machine, is this why I never win a prize? by cannedtomatoesin AskReddit

[–]guytoronto 0 points1 point ago

In Ontario, Canada, these machines MUST give out a prize. Years ago, they were categorized as gambling machines since there was no real element of skill involved. Now all the claw games in Ontario have two bins. You get one chance at the "big" prize, and if you don't win, you get to keep playing for a much cheaper prize in the other bin.

We had my daughter baptised for family reasons. My price was that I got to choose the cake by Criticalistin atheism

[–]guytoronto 6 points7 points ago

My wife and I are atheists. My parents wanted us to have our children baptized. I said definitely not. Why? Because I don't believe in those things. And I won't support an institution like the Church based on its history.

It's not my job to make my parents happy. It's my job to make this world a better place for my children. Supporting an archaic belief system doesn't help.

[–]guytoronto -9 points-8 points ago

I disagree with your reasonings. You let your mother-in-law use you and your family as a crutch for her beliefs. Some will say that "it does no harm". Allowing your child to be baptized gives validity to the religion.

There are documents that were created while Ben Franklin was alive that serve as proof of his existence.

Seriously, dummy, do you want me to try to find a shopkeeper's ledger from when he was 20 that reads "Jesus is two weeks behind on his tab again..."?

Dude! Jesus was supposedly walking around healing the sick, walking on water, doing miraculous shit, and your contention is that people wouldn't document it while it was happening? Nobody wrote about him as he did these things. People wrote about a lot of other stuff that was happening, just not the Miracle Boy. Very convenient.

Applied for a job over my head...[UPDATE!] by algoreofwebdevin webdev

[–]guytoronto 8 points9 points ago

I once got called in to interview for a management position in a company I worked for years before. Enough people remembered me and thought I'd be a great fit for the position.

I went in essentially already having the job to talk about salary. Figuring they would negotiate down, I asked for double what I was making at my current job, plus $5k on top of that. It was a ridiculous amount of money for someone with my qualifications.

They ended up paying me that amount for two years before corporate downsizing. I felt so rich!

Your rant just supports my position. You have no examples. You use hostility to conceal your ignorance.

Here you go:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus

  • The evidence for the existence of Jesus all comes from after his lifetime.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus#cite_note-9

  • We have no writings from the days of Jesus himself. Jesus never wrote anything, nor do we have any contemporary accounts of his life or death. There are no court records, official diaries, or newspaper accounts that might provide firsthand information.

http://dmc.members.sonic.net/sentinel/naij3.html

  • Thallus wrote about the crucifixion of Jesus. His writing date to circa 52 A.D. (after Jesus' lifestime)

http://www.gotquestions.org/did-Jesus-exist.html

  • The first-century Roman Tacitus, who is considered one of the more accurate historians of the ancient world, mentioned superstitious “Christians” (Tacitus was born years after Jesus' death)

  • Flavius Josephus is the most famous Jewish historian. In his Antiquities he refers to James, “the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ.” (Flavius Josephus was born years after Jesus' death)

I'll await your powerful rebuttal. Again, please show one example of documentation written during Jesus' lifetime that refers to him.

The documents he was referenced in were written years after his life. Nothing written during his lifetime refers to his existence.

God asked Mary through an angel if she would like to be the mother of His son.

No he didn't. Mary was told she would carry the child. Mary admitted that she was God's servant, but that's far from consentual.

Zeus, as per his habit, took what was rightly his. Heracles was but one of his many half-human sons and daughters.

That is correct.

Jesus didn't rise to heaven after death. He first was resurrected, and then ascended to heaven.

Wuh? Jesus didn't rise to heaven after death, but at some point after his death he ascended to heaven? In my dictionary, rise and ascend have similar meanings.

Jews back then did not usually speak Greek, but Aramaic. Most of the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic.

Wow...that's so wrong. The New Testament is a compilation of Greek texts. Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_testament

Jesus was not declared by his father as the ruler of all of those around him

Luke 1:31-33 - You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.

Heracles did not accomplish his labours to be purified of sin, but as a somewhat self-inflicted punishment.

Uh, nope. You don't know your Greek/Roman mythology.

Jesus vs Hercules [fixed] by guytorontoin atheism

[–]guytoronto[S] -4 points-3 points ago

Hercules was not declared ruler of all around him.

Homer, Iliad : http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Hom.+Il.+19.95 "Zeus verily spake vauntingly among all the gods: ‘Hearken unto me, all ye gods and goddesses, that I may speak what the heart in my breast biddeth me. This day shall Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth, bring to the light a man [Hercules] that shall be the lord of all them that dwell round about"

Hercules did not seek to purify his body of all sin (merely the sin of murdering his family).

After performing all his labours, he was purified and granted immortality.

Jesus did not perform miracles to purify mankind of sin, the purification of mankind is itself the miracle.

And who performed those miracles? God? Well Jesus is Lord, right?

Hercules was never written of as a historic personage (except in a strictly Euhemeristic sense).

That's a personal interpretation.

The Bibliotheca of Photius was far from the first reference to Heracles.

Did I say it was?

The description of the compilation of the New Testament is a mischaracterization.

How so? The stories of the New Testament are based on Greek writings, which where compiled into the Bible.

Validity of scripture by ShoesOnMyHandsin Christianity

[–]guytoronto -2 points-1 points ago

do you think the bible is inerrant

Impossible. There are so many interpretations. Which one is inerrant? They can't all be, as they all have slight variations in meaning. You can't say different things with different meanings, and then claim they are both right and mean the same thing.

Naturally, it was written by man but influenced by God.

That is one interpretation. It is not fact. It is something people take on faith.

To say man makes mistakes is true, but I feel God would make sure His word was properly recorded.

Not at all. If God had wanted his word to be properly recorded, he could have engraved every single word into granite. He would have spoken to people in every country in the world. He would have had people of every language write down his words. He did none of those things.

Since then there have been numerous translations and then various versions which probably stand a higher chance of having errors.

Correct.

I've been reading through a book full of essays on it and I feel it is imperative that if anything original scripture was inerrant or else it could all be made up.

And that is the crux of the matter. There is no way to validate the original writings. Even words written today are never without error. With all our modern technology, documented research, computers, spell checkers, grammar checkers, and proof readers, books still hit the shelves with errors. Go back 2000 years, where information was shared via verbal stories, the literacy rate was 5-20%, and all writings were scribbles on papyrus.
