What is happening on the cellular level when you rub lotion into your skin, and why is it good for you? by csiharin askscience

[–]gaso 0 points1 point ago

Coconut oil is fairly heavy, maybe you want to try something lighter like olive oil for your face? I'm a pretty greasy-skinned middle aged white guy so my pores may be a bit different, but when I use olive oil it seems to kinda 'soak' into my skin (even on my face) and ends up feeling clean? I guess Your Mileage May Vary :)

I think some people use it to clean their ears, so perhaps it does something to dissolve dead skin (which is why I end up feeling clean after 15 or 20 minutes?)

I don't see any obvious way to donate to him. I'd gladly kick him $5, just to help build awareness that there is support for someone publicly taking these positions...

At the moment it is at 1 point, which is just about where a question that could easily be answered by Google should stand. I may have taken action to keep it at 1 point...

Is the Bible a Golden Calf? by Mysticbusin DebateReligion

[–]gaso 2 points3 points ago

True. I was going to mention that: what if I started editing the Bible to make it better...how is divine intervention / inspiration determined? Simply by getting someone else to believe you? Strange stuff indeed...

Is the Bible a Golden Calf? by Mysticbusin DebateReligion

[–]gaso 2 points3 points ago

Each and every intentional revision, translation, and accidental change that occurred from the original, initial 'divine inspiration' and the particular variant end result that a given Christian is using for reference with regards to their religion...would also need to be 'divinely inspired'. That's a lot of divine intervention...

It's good for push to come to shove. Let's the people see how much liberty they actually have in hand. Then, ya'll can collectively decide if you still want to allow your current government to continue, or if it needs torn down and replaced by something more representative.

Is it possible to cold crash too long? If so, how long is too long? by EatATacoin Homebrewing

The yeast will flocculate itself and any sediment out to the bottom of the bottle over time. Anything left will settle out when you stick the beers in the fridge to drink them. I agree with you, why make bottle carbonating a risky proposition by making the job harder for the yeast by removing most of them before they've finished their job?

Watch the skaters throughout practice. Skate the outside if you can stand the workout, the inside when you tire and need a break. Skate nonstop the two hours of practice, and watch the skaters nonstop. Make calls continuously in your head, even outside of scrims.

Don't worry about making bad/wrong calls, it WILL happen and it WILL HAPPEN A LOT :) Hopefully the skaters will cut you some slack since it's only a scrim, and realize you're attempting to learn a very difficult thing.

Ref all positions, regardless of where you think you'll spend most of your time.

Most of all, have fun and just make sure things are fun, safe, and fair for the skaters. Don't sweat the small stuff! After a few months, it'll get easier.

I've been reffing for a year and a half, reffed a dozen bouts, two to three practices a week...and I'm still terrible :)

How exactly do you go about flavoring your beer, or coming up with recipes? by sonoma12in Homebrewing

[–]gaso 0 points1 point ago

Throwing random ingredients into online calculators set to "American Pale Ale" are how I've been coming up with recipes, as I just started this hobby in February.

"Citra hops? That sounds neat. Munich malt? Cool. Now, how to make that fit into an APA?"
fiddles with values
"Great! Let's see what it tastes like!"
a month or so later
"Interesting! Next!"

Hopefully in a year or two I'll have enough experience to know how to bring my ideal Pale Ale (or IPA) from what I can imagine in my head through to a glass on my patio.

I tried making two 2.5 batches side by side, and found it challenged my abilities and equipment :)

They all have turned out reasonably decent, I'm repeatedly pleasantly surprised. Not really amazingly complex or interesting, but very drinkable. Starting to miss the wonderful smell you get from nice dry-hopped PA/IPAs, so that might be my next addition to the mix (assuming my first all-grain BIAB batch turns out drinkable!).

What, exactly, do you guys think about during sex? I feel like I think too much about female arousal to enjoy my own... by love-shy-throwawayin OneY

[–]gaso -1 points0 points ago

Sounds familiar: I recently learned simultaneous orgasms are not the norm thanks to another reddit post, whereas in my head I consider them a requirement of having sex (I think I too fetishize the female orgasm to a certain extent...I certainly find it in-fucking-credibly hot). I'm not sure what to recommend, except for lots and lots of sex. Maybe have a single glass of wine with your lady friend before hand. Eventually it should work itself out? Certainly sounds like you're spending too much time lost in your own head.

It is a TON to digest at once. Honestly, I would not worry about making calls until you feel 100% comfortable about skating while keeping your eyes on the action continuously without crashing into anyone else. Once you've mastered that, now you can start to judge the action.

When you begin to judge the action, don't bother calling or verbalizing anything externally. Watch, think in your head "Was it a major? Whistle, Color, Number, Penalty, Major. Was it a minor? Color, Number, Penalty". Get used to having that mental framework so you're used to thinking of the skaters as Color+Number, and the penalty as the abbreviation and hand signal.

Once you get pretty comfortable just with the mental framework, you can start to make the hand signals, and asking skaters during practice for feedback: "That looked like she back blocked you, where did she actually hit you? It looked like that wall was using their arms to hold you back, was that actually the case?" On more complicated penalties, confer with other refs: "I saw this complex situation. Who should have gotten the penalty?"

Once you feel pretty confident you're seeing the initiation, the penalty, and the outcome correctly, start to verbally call, whistle, and signal as appropriate. Do this during practice, as you're going to make a LOT of bad calls. You're going to stumble over trying to retrieve an offending skaters number from her arm while they're jumbled in a pack. You're going to call things that were minors as majors. You're going to lose track of the action due to collisions with skaters in the ref lanes. It's going to be very, very difficult :)

tl;dr: To avoid being psyched out, start slowly and have very low expectations for yourself. Master skating, watching the action, avoiding fallen skaters and other refs. Memorize how to call penalties. Call them in your head until it comes out right every time. Get feedback from the skaters and other refs. Once you feel comfortable with the notion, verbalize. Screw up. A LOT. Keep at it, because practice makes slightly better than before.

Single Malt and Single Hop Pale Ales are what I'm focusing on (about five batches in), finding out what I like and what don't care for with a different combination each time.

Thanks for the input!!

This weekend...Miz Ida & the All-Nightas are going to be at the Bullfrog Friday night, they're a pretty nice blues band. Royal Benson are playing at RumRunners, I think I've heard/seen them before but I may have been intoxicated as I can't say I remember much ;)

The Bullfrog had a delicious Pale Ale they called Hopsphyxiation, but they've since taken it off the list, a couple interesting new beers on tap but nothing I'm wild about (just the old standby Edgar).

I am going camping this weekend so I haven't asked around, but I'll ask the girls at practice this Thursday if anything is going on in town this weekend and post up anything I can find! ...and I'll try to continue to dig up interesting local news on occasion to throw into the events as well!
