Am I ruining it for everyone by accepting a (possibly REALLY) low salary? by MyWussAccountin engineering

You may want to re-evaluate your approach to answering legitimate questions.

Across Italy police are cracking down on Ferrari and Lamborghini drivers, but not because they are driving too fast. Italy, like so much of southern Europe, is drowning in debt, so police are pursuing drivers to make sure they are declaring and therefore paying taxes. by skreendreamz1in worldnews

The IVA (VAT) tax is 21% of everything that is sold to consumers. If you have a business and sell something to me, the money I give to you are 79% for yourself and 21% as VAT. At the end of the month, you show to the state all the copies of your receipts and say "look, I sold 10'000 euros of stuff, so I owe you 2'100 as VAT". Most small business in Italy try to make as less receipts as possible, so they owe less to the state.

Spent all yesterday downloading the game. Finally have time to play. Error 37. Fuck. I really thought it was acceptable for Blizzard to have problems in the very first days, but now it has been 5 days, and I don't think it is acceptable anymore. They took the risk of an always-online DRM, and they reaaaaally should have handled this better.

As an Italian, I always thought that it is amazing how easily Americans can return stuff in the store and get a refund. Here you can't return anything if it's opened and if it is correctly working. There is no such thing as "I want to return this because it is not what I wanted". Either it is not working the way it's meant to be, or it's your fault for picking a wrong product.

Sometimes I wish I could enjoy more the present and shut off my worries about fucking anything. I'm too serious about myself and my future, and I'm letting my best years slip by worrying about futile things. Goddamn, I'm going to be ashes in a fraction of universe-time, and I spend my time worrying on my Calculus final.

I also had a similar experience. When I was crossing the Canadian border (from the USA) with an Italian passport, they were like:

"Hey you are Italian, cool, what's your favorite soccer team? Totti is such a good player! Well have a nice time here in Canada"

When I would go back from Canada to USA:

"What the fuck were you even doing in Canada? Oh, a weekend with friends? Now give me address and phone number of every single Canadian you've ever met"

I'm about to turn 30, freaking out, so I wrote down basically everything I wish I knew 10 years ago... by ianmathiasin YouShouldKnow

[–]funkyshit 3 points4 points ago

I really liked this, and it's very well written. I'm 24, but you explained (a little more maturely) what are some concepts and ideas that really started to change my way of thinking in these last 5 years. You seem to have a philosophy that is very close to mine.. cynical, brutally realistic but unwilling to give up on happiness. Greetings from Italy.

As an Italian, I am confused. Isn't the " 's " an abbreviation of " is "? Isn't the non-abbreviated sentence "This guy has got a good idea about treadmills"? Do you mean you can use the " 's " for "has" as well?

I'm leaving because I can't see a bright future for Italy right now, and because I love to travel and experience new cultures. I already spent one year in Washington State (USA) when I was in high school and six months in Spain with the Erasmus program, and those have been incredible experiences. This time I'm going to work on my engineering master's thesis in the USA and I hope I can land a job (hard) or a sponsored PhD (easier) after I graduate. The advice I can give to you is:

  1. Stay the fuck away from Italians in London, it's the only way to improve your English.
  2. London isn't the same as 5-10 years ago, where you could just get there and find a job easily. Now the competition is extreme, the city is very expensive and you'll have to work very hard to find a job that can let you be independent, if you don't have demanded skills.
  3. Even if you fail, this experience is going to teach you something. The beginning is hard, but stick to it and make it work.

Good luck. Saluti dall'EUR.
