I'm sure nukethepope is a highly intelligent man of great learning, but I don't think his intelligence spreads to the people skills neccesary to help people who are questioning their faith without insulting them to the point of making them hate atheism.

And yes, most of the discourse on this subreddit could use improvement (hence this post) but if you dig deep enough there's some very interesting discussion to be had.

I do not own, borrow, or in any shape or form wear a summer frock. As a gender-atheist I don't engage in gender politics and believe that men should be men at all times. I often write to my local politician to secure legislation enshrining that into place but that doesn't mean I have views on gender.

Comment on any content on /r/newzealand that could possibly have any slight connection with anything.

I think you'll find that as my comments are written in English, one of the official languages of New Zealand, everything I say is completely relevant to /r/newzealand.

It wasn't a meme at all! It was a comment thread. iirc it was /u/nukethepope who was giving both barrels to someone whose beliefs he didn't like, and other /r/atheism users called him out on using stereotypes, bigotry and bad logic and he got downvoted as he threw a hissy fit. It was that moment that made me realise that /r/atheism were actually a pretty diverse bunch, and if you could make it past the loud assholes there was much to be learned.

I think the content is worse but the community better, but like I said in the OP I didn't stick around to see if my first impression was correct.

It's a tricky line to draw between being usefully provocative to make people think and so negative or offensive that you get ignored as a "typical devilworshipping atheist". My personal experience of the /r/atheism of two or three years ago was that it was needlessly offensive and offputting, but I suppose that's a very subjective judgement.

My first experience was years ago, iirc /r/atheism wasn't a default subreddit. This is a very subjective view from not very much browsing, but back then although the memes and ragecomics were fewer and thought-provoking articles more frequent, the community itself seemed to have a much narrower view of what being atheist means, basically that you have to hate all Christianity. I think the frontpaging of /r/atheism has brought lots of pretty average content but it's also meant more people expressing a wider range of views.

But like I say, I was Christian at the time I was quite offended, so maybe it seemed worse than it is.

Changing laws is done only by politicians. It comes up during elections. Nandor left politics partly because of the issue. There's at least one political party devoted to just this issue. Advocating the change of laws is a political issue no matter how you play with semantics.

I really like the moderation and if moderators started banning people for opinions /r/atheism would fracture and die in a massive drama storm and this valuable resource would be lost. But I think that's not neccesary, we're all atheists here so all we need to do is use reason and politely remind one another when we're going too far or not being constructive.

The community has improved a lot lately, I'm not sure exactly why because I didn't visit for the longest time, and I think there's a lot more members here today who are interested in constructive discussion than there used to be. Gandhi said "be the change you want to see in the world", and I think that posting about positive approaches to atheism will help a lot.

Oh definitely, there are good memes and ragecomics that come from /r/atheism but a lot of them are in a tone that discourages further discussion and alienates potential converts (de-converts?) to atheism. It's those ones I dislike because they only serve to slow down the advance of reason and atheism.

School. I daresay their ability would not be impeded even if no philosopher anywhere had ever even considered the nature of beauty.

How did academia happen in the days before public funding? Did the greeks levy a tax so that anyone who wanted to, regardless of their ability, could spend their days pontificating on the nature of truth?

I see the value in cultural studies, I just don't think it requires public funding for thousands of individuals while there are still gaping holes in our knowledge economy that need plugging. Like I say, fans of humanities are welcome to follow their dreams and secure private funding, or even public loans, to indulge their hobbies but the dividends to this obscure notion of human knowledge is limited and history has proved we don't need to give away free public money to achieve those results.

Even if you consider the benefits of cultural enrichment you'd be hard pressed to make a case that it's a wise way to spend public money. Do you really think we're better off by subsidising someone's hobby to the tune of thousands of dollars a year so that the tiny portion of society that enjoys fine arts/classics/philiospophy has something to read?
