Where is Jesse Owens' signed photo of Hitler now? That would be worth a couple of dollars on eBay.

OK but I think it's a stretch to say he's embarrassed by it.

ELI5 Why you can't prove a negative. by rhubarbbusin explainlikeimfive

[–]fapficionado 7 points8 points ago

The example I was given was "prove you've never been married".

There's such a thing as a marriage license. There's no such thing as a non-marriage license, because people are unmarried by default.

How would you prove it? As with some other examples, it would require unreasonable effort to prove none of the millions of marriages in the world involved you.

TIL that after only 5 weeks of training, Eddie Izzard ran 43 marathons in 51 days (27+ miles a day for 7 weeks, taking only sundays off) by octobereighthin todayilearned

[–]fapficionado 11 points12 points ago

It's kind of misleading to say he "ran" all that way. At the start he was taking all day to do one, so he was only moving at three or four miles an hour.

It's still amazing that he covered the ground, no matter how fast.

Came here to post this. Let's not be so quick to call this problem inherently Asian.

The worst part of the Brazilian thing is, the students couldn't even properly regurgitate the right answer to a question they already knew if the question was asked in an unfamiliar form.

DAE feel like being labeled a "smart kid" set them up for a lot of disappointment and/or failure in life? [Old, but great comment from 1 year+ ago by a redditor] by aloneinlovein GetMotivated

[–]fapficionado 0 points1 point ago

When I became a father I read an article about this.

It essentially said, never praise your kids for being smart.

Praise them for effort and persistence and particularly for knowing when a strategy isn't working and trying a different one. And tell them that everyone finds some things easy and some things hard.

I do still sometimes say "that was clever!" or "you're smart!" when he does something good, but I'm very careful to emphasise those other things more. We Don't Give Up, I tell him, and if a problem seems hard we Find Another Way to solve it.

Boy won't wear hearing aid because "Super heroes don't." So what does Marvel do? Creates one by croutonsoupin offbeat

[–]fapficionado 0 points1 point ago

But ... Iron Man's suit is really just one enormous hearing aid! And, you know, seeing, walking, flying etc. aid.

That's what I would have gone with. "This hearing aid is just the beginning! One day your whole body could be covered in hearing aids!".

DAE, when typing passwords, delete everything after a mistake even though you KNOW a single backspace would suffice? by RyanHoodin DoesAnybodyElse

Not only that. On the command line where I can't see the dots, I over-delete by about 20 more chars just to be sure.

The really stupid version of this is Amazon's "Price too good to tell you on this page! Log in first!".

Seriously?

What trivial act would you like to ban or make illegal? Personally, I would like to outlaw public speakers who start off by saying, "I can't hear you!" or "Let's try that again!" by danger_mcboomin AskReddit

I saw a good variation once:

That's not really what McGuffin means. McGuffins can be revealed or known. It's more that it could be diamonds, it could be gold, it could be anything valuable (and portable), just as long as we've got an object for the plot to revolve around.

Technically it was the British lying to the British. It's not like they called up the Germans and said "Our secret weapon? Carrots! Seemed only fair to let you know."
