I'm a former pothead trying to make something of himself by enlisting- It turns out I've smoked way too much weed to ever get in. Advice? Stories? (x-post from r/military) by itslikeafiringsquadin Militaryfaq

[–]ep0k 2 points3 points ago

If OP ever needs a security clearance or has a background investigation for any reason this would be grounds for discharge under fraudulent enlistment.

During post-deployment block leave we got three new 13F, but they slipped through the cracks due to the FIST teams getting consolidated in HHC. So we think we're all present at first formation after leave, only to discover we're down 3 men we never heard about. Oh, and it's 100% urinalysis like you would expect the day after block leave. Took us awhile to figure out what the admin issue was and track them down. One of them had conned his way into getting on-post housing. No one had accountability of these guys for close to 30 days, so as you might expect they had completely trashed the place (and left their drugs out). Their brilliant master plan was to just show up on the first duty day and pretend they had been on rear-d all along, but they forgot what day block leave ended. Subsequent to this they were placed on barracks restriction while the command figured out what to do with them, and they all went AWOL together. Last we ever heard of them.

tl;dr Three privates turn base housing into drug den, go AWOL after getting caught.

Asthma past age 12 is a disqualifying condition, last I checked. Confirm with a recruiter.

Does anyone know what set these two pieces are from? by iamcasein lego

[–]ep0k 3 points4 points ago

They may be from different sets (or two variants of the same accessory). I feel like I've seen both now that you mention it.

Edit: Most of the ebay matches for the plain yellow one advertise it as "rare".

Yellow one is specifically from this set.

That's King Achu's headdress (I think) so it should be one of the sets listed on this page:

What AFSC are you enlisting for? That's going to dictate much of the character of your military experience.

I was 3C0X2 (now 3D0X4) which, after training, translated into a 9-to-5 wearing a blue uniform. I sat at a desk, wrote code, typically got released early to do PT on my own, etc. It was a sweet gig, but it wasn't what I needed, so I switched to the Army.

AF life can be pretty cushy if you're in a non-critical support job. I wouldn't be so worried about your standard of living as much as your reservations about lethal force. The odds may be incredibly slim that you'll ever need to pull the trigger, but if you can't do it when you have to then you're fucking yourself and your wingmen.

"This study clearly demonstrates that acupuncture is a useful adjunctive therapy in reducing DOE in patients with COPD." Criticisms from /r/Skeptic? by Knigelin skeptic

[–]ep0k 4 points5 points ago

68-member cohort isn't really large enough to draw a conclusion from. If this can be replicated with a larger study with better controls there might be something there. Better controls would involve, at a minimum, a "real" acupuncture group, a "sham" acupuncture group and a non-acupuncture group, all large enough to have an equal spread of non-acupuncture treatment modalities (everyone should be on the same medication, or if multiple medications are being used, they should be represented in equal proportion in each group).

There's a major difficulty in finding COPD patients who are not on some kind of pharmaceutical intervention.

The important thing to note is that even if this establishes an effect from the treatment modality, it still doesn't establish the existence of the meridian lines and vital force normally attributed to TCM.

Edit: Major issue with existing study is that everyone knows they're getting "treated". It's hard to blind for this sort of thing; you can't provide acupuncture and have the patient not know it.

If you ask why he's insisting on so much independent verification of Obama's credentials vs McCain's he'll probably eventually paint himself into the "grand conspiracy" corner where all the other government agencies that validate this sort of thing are in on it.

He'll just keep moving the goalposts and rationalizing though, you obviously won't ever convince him. Hopefully you can make his position more self-evidently absurd for the spectators though.

What was the Vanilla WoW launch like? by Sr1rachain wow

[–]ep0k 1 point2 points ago

I remember the first time I saw a player riding a mount, he was an Orc Warlock in Silverpine Forest. It had taken me all week just to get out of Tirisfal Glades (this was during the first few weeks after launch). I couldn't comprehend how he'd gotten to level 40 so fast.

So I found these in Waterville, any ideas? by Thraxbamain Maine

[–]ep0k 1 point2 points ago

Someone put a bunch of these in my brochure stand last year (outside the veteran services office at USM's Portland campus). They also hid a bunch of them in the multicultural center, mostly in Qurans.

I still have them somewhere. No clue what they're on about though. I think whoever designed and distributed them is just nuts.

Edit: This was in the fall, though, definitely not in May.

Here in Maine they're allowed to call themselves "Doctor".

This one sues anyone who calls him a quack. Made something of a splash on Pharyngula awhile back.

I also ran into one working as a primary care doctor at the VA.

Kary Mullis is a Nobel laureate who denies climate change and the link between HIV and AIDS and is convinced he met a glowing, speaking, extraterrestrial raccoon from another dimension.

Nobel prize winners sometimes go very far off the deep end when they get outside their field of subject matter expertise, and they often don't get called out on it because of their status.
