I've been living with my partner for over two years and I just figured out how to not do that. Going on over a week with a clean toothpaste tube. I'm quite proud of myself. (Although I do use a separate bathroom for the rest of my mess. One step at a time.)

In the United States you can ask for tap water at restaurants...and for many they offer it without you asking. I was in Germany a year ago and always had to pay for bottled, they wouldn't even allow me to drink the tap water.

We took a day trip to SF and found an abandoned hospital. Set up a ladder so we could climb to a floor that wasn't boarded up. It was a very beautiful adventure.
