Review: Watercress at Bridge Street Town Centre (A lot of hype, but still has room for improvement) by GastroWstlndin HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]dtjb 0 points1 point ago

I know it's tasty, high-quality stuff, but it's not Kobe. I don't care that it isn't Kobe, I would eat it regardless, but to market it as such seems manipulative.

That aside, I'll give them another try. It's not fair to judge any restaurant on a single visit, especially when they're new.

My wife and I ate there a will ago, it was okay. She got the green tomatoes and porcini (?) soup, I had the pork chops. It was a perfectly acceptable meal, but nothing really remarkable.

I noticed they had Kobe sliders on the menu, which immediately made me lose a bit of respect for them.

We might try it again in the future, but it's not exactly at the top of the list.

Then these wouldn't be people looking to hire a professional production company anyways.

It'd be great if they could hire a production company, but the reality of running a small business is finding the balance of "good enough." It's certainly possible for someone to learn how to do a simple, basic product video without years of schooling and training.

people think they can pick up a cheap HD camera and some other cheap equipment and think they can make quality videos.

Honestly? If we're talking about simple product videos, give an intelligent but untrained person access to the internet, a few weeks, and $4k in gear and they can get pretty close.

I agree. Problem is, there isn't exactly a lot of people volunteering to tell the CEO that.

Zach Braff on hotels charging for internet by cabo0sein geek

[–]dtjb 1 point2 points ago

Typically, a resort fee includes more than just internet. It includes access to the health clubs/fitness center, free phone use, morning newspaper, bottled water, printing, etc.

Also, a lesser known fact is that some places let you decline the resort fee if you tell them you're not going to be using those services.

What Antivirus are most redditors using? by TheUKLibertarianin techsupport

I've run Windows for years without any active virus protection. I'll run a scan every one in a while when I do other updates, never had any problems.

Use some common sense and you'll be fine (don't torrent, download exe's from email, install random toolbars, etc).

How large a *.pst file can Outlook 2010 handle? And, how is the performance affected by the size of the pst file? by d14bbl0in software

[–]dtjb 2 points3 points ago

Thunderbird does not have a native calendar. Gmail doesn't have shared contacts. Sure, you can use multiple applications and install add-ons and configure tweaks to replace Outlook, but it's not a cohesive integrated solution. I've used Thunderbird, Lightning, iCal, and Google Apps, and in my opinion, for people dealing with high volumes of activity Outlook is very good at what it does, better than cobbling together a bunch of other applications.

Is it effective to show off client testimonials on designer's website? by RussianAccentin usability

[–]dtjb 1 point2 points ago

Depends on your customers. Agencies don't care, but I think re-affirming to small places that don't have experience hiring designers.

However, I wouldn't recommend splaying testimonials across the front page, that comes off a bit amateurish. Maybe in your porfolio/showcase, on the project details for each piece have a section for 'client feedback.' I wouldn't put in anything that is too effusive or generic (like "Great job!"), but only use it to demonstrate where you solved customer's problems ("our conversions increased by 37%"). Keep it professional and emotionless.

Just my two cents.

Outlook does a lot more than email - calendar/appointments, resource booking, contact management, task assignment, etc.

get out of Outlook

I haven't found any suitable replacements, unless you piecemeal 5-6 different applications together.

I am Barack Obama by jebus5434in Libertarian

[–]dtjb 0 points1 point ago*

Looking at your list of 13 -

Take out Bush, Adams, and Roosevelt since the middle name was specifically used as a designation from other family members that had served in the office. You're down to 9.

Take out Grant, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Hayes, and Johnson because while they used a middle initial, that's not what is being done here. Nobody is calling him Barack H. Obama, they're specifically emphasizing Hussein.

Take out Martin Van Buren, because Van is not a middle name. You're down to 3 presidents born in the 18th and 19th centuries (Arthur, Harrison, Taft). Not exactly a case for modern use.

I can't say whether these 3 men preferred the middle name to be used or if it was inferred upon them. I can say that Obama doesn't refer to himself with his middle name. If you look at his books where he is presenting himself to the public, he (like nearly everyone else) doesn't use his middle name. When people call out the Hussein they are not referring to him as he's known, they are inserting it in spite of common usage or even his own usage. Why?

[–]dtjb 19 points20 points ago*

It saves me time. It lets me know whoever crafted the message doesn't care about editorial rigor, but is playing to the cheap seats.

We didn't call them William Jefferson or George Herbert or Ronald Wilson. Calling him Barack Hussein is done for no reason other than to invoke racism and nationalism.

It's cheap, ignorant, and discredits the entire message.

certain evils are necessary to help keep the order of things.

Going back to the original point, it is necessary to preserve our preferred order of things. Being the dominant species we are, we have the higher reasoning to recognize this isn't being done for resources or survival. Even if it were, being the dominant species we are, we have the ability to adapt to new ecosystem balances unlike elephants.
