Small-town Iowa wedding tomorrow, anything I should/could add? by doubleEin malefashionadvice

[–]doubleE 0 points1 point ago

Believe me, I'd like to suit up or don a blazer. But I sort of forgot about the wedding and just remembered on Tuesday, then had to travel for work Wednesday and Thursday, so no time to prepare. I follow MFA, but don't have a great wardrobe at my disposal, so I'm making do with what I've got. If I know who'll be attending like I think I do, I'm already better dressed than most of the dudes there.

Conservative Think-tanks Launch Campaign to Turn Americans Against Wind Energy: Documents show for the first time that local anti-wind groups are co-ordinating and working with national fossil-fuel funded advocacy groups to wreck the wind industry. by davidreiss666in politics

I've been right under and inside (the base, didn't get to climb to the top) of a large 1.5MW turbine, and indeed they do produce noise. The site engineer told us that at full output, the tips of the blades are moving up to 200 mph. Anything moving through the air that fast is bound to make some noise.

Single ladies, what places do you go to when you're interested in finding a potential other? by curiousManWithQin AskReddit

[–]doubleE 1 point2 points ago

Yes, holy crap, I didn't believe this until I experienced it first hand. Went to an outdoor brewfest with a friend, his wife, and their puppy, Penny. After seeing all the attention she was getting I asked them if I could walk her around for a bit, and it was almost overwhelming. So many people coming up to me, bending down to pet her, chatting for a bit. It felt like I was cheating the system or something.

So yes, a dog WILL attract people, but you still gotta do the socializing.

4chan's actual favorite TV shows (results from 2011 /tv/ survey) by avatizerin entertainment

[–]doubleE 2 points3 points ago*

I'm currently watching it for the first time (mid season 6 5 now), having seen no spoilers prior. It has some pretty powerful moments. [SPOILER] Alex Rousseau's death scene immediately comes to mind. I think it relies heavily on the cliffhanger endings and criss-crossing of character's paths (holy shit it's that guy?! moments) to make it such a compelling show. The first few seasons I was totally engrossed, nearly obsessed. I'd have Lost dreams. Now I just want to get to the end so I can have 45-90 minutes of my evenings back. It's still entertaining, if a bit ridiculous.

Also, boobs. Kate, Juliette, Claire, Alex, Anna-Lucia, young Eloise, Hurley... They just did not cast ugly people for that show.

Electrical engineer here, just for fun I'll try to theorize what would actually happen should someone plug this into their guitar.

If the the hot wire from the 120V plug is soldered to the tip of the 1/4" jack, this would put 120V AC across everything in the guitar that is used to seeing a couple volts1, and maybe a few milliamps of current[educated guess]. I calculate that the resistance of the pots+pickup will be around 250kΩ2,3. So, it would only draw about 5 mA of current (Ohm's law, V=I*R (ignoring the capacitor for this exercise)). Not really enough to melt anything. BUT, the insulation in the pickups, pots, switch, and wiring may not be robust enough to handle 120V, so it may fail, causing a short circuit and lots of current, which would result in melted wires and lots of smoke. Because the neutral of the 120V source is connected to the (corrected, thanks britishben) ring sleeve (ground) of the 1/4" jack, I think the risk to the person holding it would be minimal.

However, if the evil bastard who created this thing wired the 120V hot wire to the ring sleeve of the 1/4" jack, then almost everything above still would apply, except now everything on the guitar that is grounded (strings, bridge, about anything metal) would be energized with 120V AC, and would be much more dangerous to anyone holding it.

That's my take on it, anyway.

Manslaughter? No one died. Still, I like the message that sort of charge sends to other inattentive drivers. I hope she gets jail time for the assault charge.

Edit: I am an idiot. I read "A ten-year-old girl riding in the back of Larimer’s car was injured" and thought that was it.

Man survives 10,000 volts by nativeofspacein WTF

[–]doubleE 0 points1 point ago*

There is a path for current to flow through the bird. In one foot, out the other. But, no current passes through the bird because the difference in voltage between it's feet is zero. The voltage under one foot is exactly the same as the voltage under the other foot, because both feet are standing on the same wire, which is effectively the same voltage at all points (over a short length, anyway). V=I*R, so if V=0, I=0.

question about LED dimming circuit using LM3524 by jrkvin ECE

[–]doubleE 1 point2 points ago

Your LED draws 1000 mA (1A) of current. Assuming you're just driving one LED, you'd need a 10Ω resistor in series with your LED connected to the output of the your dimmer circuit. BUT it has to be a beefy 10W resistor able to handle the heat and high current.

Fujitsu develops a 2.3kW high-capacity power supply unit for servers, conversion efficiency rate of 94.8% by avrusin geek

[–]doubleE 3 points4 points ago*

The batteries act as a buffer between the rectifiers and the DC loads. They are sealed lead-acid batteries, something like 4 or 6V per cell. There are some inverters that convert the DC from the batteries back into AC to back up critical stuff like fire suppression and egress lighting, acting like a UPS. Large AC stuff like most lighting and air conditioning is mains AC though.

The DC load basically runs straight off the batteries, and the rectifiers just continually charge the batteries. If the power goes out, the DC load (and AC load fed from the inverters) is completely unaffected, no transfer switch involved. The battery run times vary, but one site I recently visited was around 4 hours. Most sites have a standby generator, too. Here a transfer switch comes into play, automatically switching the entire site from utility power to generator power.

That's how they do it at telecom sites. Everything phone related runs on -48V DC, so there are rooms full of rectifiers that convert AC to DC, and another room full of batteries.

Here's the DC plant at mobile carrier's wireless site. Each fridge-looking thing is a rectifier that provides 54V 400A DC output. And here is a battery room.

These sites are quite different from (and probably much smaller than) large server farms, though.
