Reddit, as a classical musician, tell me what we could do better. What is it about classical music that keeps you away from our concerts? by a12345678910in AskReddit

[–]doozed 2 points3 points ago

The image is definitely part of the problem, and trying the same music in less formal settings might help to attract a new audience. Some places are even doing operas in bars: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/sep/19/opera-london-pub-kings-head

I completely agree. I really wanted to like it, too, but just couldn't.

He's very informal, and uses a lot of lazy synonyms and expressions that really don't build up an image of the scene or characters. This might just be me, though. Try a few pages and random and see what you think of it.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter -- The show is great, but I can't stand Jeff Lindsay's writing style.

If it costs >$1000 dollars for a birth control that lasts ten years, but having a child can cost the government (and you even more) hundreds of thousands of dollars, then what other reason beyond religion is there for this big hoopla over contraception? by badabain AskReddit

[–]doozed 0 points1 point ago

I meant average across the entire population. It's another argument if you want to talk about slowing the growth of particular segments of the population, but, to be honest, that's not a discussion I'm comfortable having.

Of course some people use more government services than they support in taxes, but do you actually think that on average a person costs society more than they produce? If that were true, there wouldn't be the resources available to invest in new children, even if you kept increasing private and public debt.

You can take the argument to both extremes and see that there is some hypothetical ideal population growth rate (all else constant -- an unrealistic assumption, actually). Too low, and we end up in a few decades with a lot of old folks supported by only a few workers. Too high, and we end up with current workers supporting far too many children.

I'm not disagreeing with the spirit of your argument, but it is worth keeping in mind that kids don't disappear when they turn 18. That investment is generally paid back by a lifetime of working and paying taxes. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be the money to pay for these things in the first place!

I'd say the difference is that Barbie is presented as a realistic character from the real world. Little boys playing with action figures from fantasy lands don't face the same message. I played with Ninja Turtles but never aspired to be a reptile.

While I enjoy self-congratulation as much as the next Canuck, there were a number of other factors behind the decision. Notably, a provincial election was coming up in Quebec, where the prospect of war with Iraq was particularly unpopular. The Liberal government was worried that joining the coalition would give the separatists an edge in the campaign.
