Fox News: "Is it better to not go to college at all?"

djrocksteady -2 points-1 points 4 days ago* [-]

First off, your premise is false. No one actually believes that everything MUST have a marketable value, this is your own projection. That was why I ignored your specific invalid complaint, and related the issue to schooling and economics, which is the theme of the OP submission. So other than you labeling me and attacking me, I didn't real feel there was much else to address.

Fox News: "Is it better to not go to college at all?"

Just making sure you see the forest for the trees. You make a sweeping generalization about the "sad consequences" of our capitalistic system, ignoring the peace and prosperity it has brought to millions. It is a generally positive force so when people criticize it without really backing up the criticism, I tend to react.

I was merely wanted to point out that capitalism can be useful when applied properly, something not done in the education industry. We all lose when our high schools fail to educate. Try to respond with something other than an ad-hominem.

Reddit, am I the only one who thinks dubstep is a lazy, terrible excuse for music?

djrocksteady 7 points8 points 4 days ago[-]

Theres something to be said for a a type of music that is designed for a certain type of experience. The idea that a sound can compel your body to move is fairly profound. I also like that this is done on a primal, emotional level through melodies rather than in a more rational, cerebral way, as it is with vocally oriented music. It also generally "fun" music, and I understand that is not meant for everyone...

Sounds like public schools could use a healthy dose of capitalism, considering how you just highlighted all of their many failings. Schools are localized monopolies that have been insulated from any form of market competition. Not working out so great is it?

I remember that article too, I think it was about a underwear model who described the process of getting prepared for a shoot.

The Young and the Jobless: the minimum wage hike has driven the wages of teen employees down to $0.00.

djrocksteady 0 points1 point 5 days ago[-]

Those explanations are not mutually exclusive. Yes older people are taking the available jobs. If there were no minimum wage, the number of total available jobs would increase. So because of older people taking all the limited positions, the younger kids get screwed. Minimum wage just exacerbates the problem.

I think you overestimate the power of Republicans to get things done. With the party hacks, the moderates, and the tea partiers, good luck getting them to agree on anything.

Your understanding of The Great Depression is wrong, even though that is what FDR said many times. There are several books written about this, improvident monetary policy of the 1920's (just like the 2000') had the largest role. Add in Smoot-Hawley and FDR make work programs and you have yourself a depression. Placing the blame on fear is essentially the outdated Keynesian "animal spirits" theory.

CNN's Anderson Cooper: First Amendment has been Suspended.

djrocksteady 1 point2 points 27 days ago[-]

Criminal yet allowed under the current regulatory scheme? Seems like a conundrum. The government is aware of this matter yet chooses to sit by idly except to extract cash outside of the rule of law, do you think this is coincidence? The government is just as responsible as BP, who do you think allowed them to set up shop out there (under certain conditions that they pretty much complied with)?

yes, good show on the pointless internet stalking skills, next time use them for something worthwhile. You are eager enough to point out private, personal facts but to lazy to fact check. You may have a career waiting for you in television news. Good show indeed..... not.

Can Reddit possibly suck Stephen Colbert's dick any more?

djrocksteady 0 points1 point 27 days ago[-]

The Daily Show actually does better journalism than Colbert for sure, but it would be nice if Jon didn't pretend he was just there to make people laugh. He wants to do better journalism, but he still wants the "I'm a comedian so I don't need to hold myself to the same standards as other journalists". Colbert sticks to the entertainment aspect, and I think there is something to that. Disclaimer: I don't think Jon Stewart is funny.

waay late I know, but I've been to some libertarian seminars/conventions for college students and the hot chick thing is changing, slowly but surely.

Once all the strippers and prostitutes realize they are libertarian, there will be an overload ;)

Well that was informing yet unhelpful :P

Right now I am kind of following the Peter Schiff advice..keeping money out of the dollar in smaller more stable countries that can bounce back easier..right now I am in emerging markets for my IRA, but I would like to look at precious metals at some point, but I am scared to buy gold at this point because it is valued so high and that market seems to be easily manipulated.
