Is Marriage Evolving? by BranderChatfieldin Christianity

[–]deuteros 71 points72 points ago

There are two main concepts of marriage:

1) Prior to 100 years ago marriage was based on strengthening social ties and the community and ensuring paternity.

2) Today (at least in the West) marriage is based on romantic love and individual happiness.

Marriage in the Bible is based on the more communal and practical ideas of marriage in #1. American marriages today don't really serve a communal purpose any longer and instead serve individual desires. This is the fundamental change. Everything else is just a symptom.

It's pretty recent. In the UK marriage certificates only began to be issued by the state in the 1800s. Prior to that marriages were recorded by the local church parish.

At the time Galileo didn't have much evidence for his theory but he painted the geocentrists as idiots.

I hate this sort stuff because it assumed that Christians who pray don't bother doing anything else.

Except Galileo was a hothead and his book wasn't neutral. He made the pope look like an idiot and Galileo didn't exactly have a lot of proof for heliocentrism at the time to overturn 2000 years of established science.

The love of God does not cancel the wrath of God. by WalkerMobilein Christianity

[–]deuteros 0 points1 point ago

You have to read the story from Abraham's perspective.

In Abraham's day sacrificing children to gods was common. The shock of the story comes when God prevents Abraham from making the sacrifice, not from asking Abraham to do it in the first place.

The point of the story is to show that God abhors human sacrifice. Westerners have seen human sacrifice as abhorrent for thousands of years so the point is somewhat lost on us.

Only 2% of Norwegians attend church regularly. Parliament votes to introduce separation of Church and State. Do you think this will save Christianity in that country? by theholyprepucein Christianity

[–]deuteros 9 points10 points ago

one of the reasons Americans are so religious is because the separation of church and state created a free market for religion which encouraged more responsive churches and denominations to grow at the expense of those who were not nurturing their members.

All that's done is turned religion into a commodity to be marketed to consumers. The largest churches in the United States are very market driven and rely heavily on flashy websites, promotional material, and services.

(I live in Poland) >90% declare themselves as Catholics, but church attendance is about 25-35% on average.

According to this and several other surveys, church attendance in Poland is close to 60%, which is higher than even the United States.

Video gamers of INTP... what are you playing, and what kind of games do you like? by wallysmith127in INTP

[–]deuteros 2 points3 points ago

I'm on a bit of a gaming hiatus right now. I haven't touched my 360 in two months after playing several hours a day for a year.

I usually enjoy shooters, RPGs, strategy games (like Civilization). I have almost no interest in multiplayer. I've bought every Halo game but I was only interested in the single player campaign.

Some of my all time favorites:

Mario 3, Ultima VII: Serpent Isle (probably my all time favorite game), Civilization series, Wolfenstein 3D, Baldur's Gate, Lemmings, System Shock 2, Fallout 3 & New Vegas, Starcraft.

Russia, Japan aim for the Moon: "We're talking about establishing permanent bases." by mepperin science

[–]deuteros 0 points1 point ago

A "dark age" is a period in history characterized by a relative lack of written records. The collapse of the Western Roman Empire disrupted most of the social, cultural, and political institutions of Western Europe. In fact without the Catholic Church as the only surviving social institution, there would have been no cathedrals or monasteries built to perpetuate Latin as a common language or to preserve Classical learning.

The Greeks also had a dark age. It has nothing to do with intellectual stagnation or religion.
