5 Weeks of Go by urielin programming

[–]davebrk 21 points22 points ago

Maybe. I think they are just disappointed. Everybody had their own list of features that they wanted to see in the next mainstream language. We even expected the new language to come out of Google since Microsoft already has C# and Apple Objective-C.

Then we got Go instead and people not only saw Go as a regression, nothing evolutionary or revolutionary, but they felt they lost the only chance they had of a good new programming language coming out of Google. So naturally they got upset. Read reddit posts from back then. Hackernews'. slashdot's. Not that they didn't have valid criticisms (at least AFAICT) regarding null pointers, generics, version control, etc...

In spite of all that Go is still here. It also has matured. And even though it is not what people expected it's not Java or C++ or anything familiar so people are picking it up. There is also the movement back to native code and static typing and Go fits in with that as well. It also attracts people who look at D and see a cleaner C++ with more features... people who subscribe to Python zen of There should be one - and preferably only one - obvious way to do something. So on the one hand you have got the Go lovers, mosty over at HN, and the D lovers over here. The rest of us don't count because we don't vote down only up.

[–]davebrk 3 points4 points ago

Ah. I didn't look at the votes. It does seem like the people here at proggit are a bit sensitive about Go. At least they aren't infatuated with anything Javascript like on HN.

What does Israel lack? by whatsonmymindgrapesin Israel

[–]davebrk 0 points1 point ago

For ice coffee it is not that much of a difference. 12 vs 8 IIRC.

You can also ask Aroma to make the coffee extra strong which puts it in the same level as Roladin's regular coffee.

Netanyahu, Mofaz agree to cancel elections, form a Likud-Kadima unity government by BoiledGizzardin Israel

[–]davebrk 1 point2 points ago

I actually literally LOL when I read it in the paper this morning. Anything is better than an election. Also it will be interesting to see what Bibi will do with regard to גיוס חרדים.

Mofaz, of course, is a non entity. Nobody cares about him.

What really makes you think is whether Bibi and Mofaz planned it all in advance to get Livni to resign. If so, then it is a truly brilliant move.

'It makes no sense to me,' said Waylander, 'but then life itself makes no sense. So it becomes reasonable.'

Waylander by David Gemmell

From the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett (not one liners, but still the best quotes in fantasy IMO. There are hundreds, I'm picking a few I really like):

… and then Jack chopped down the beanstalk, adding murder and ecological vandalism to the theft, enticement and trespass charges already mentioned, but he got away with it and lived happily ever after without so much as a guilty twinge about what he had done. Which proves that you can be excused just about anything if you’re a hero, because no one asks inconvenient questions.

Hogfather

Death was standing behind a lectern, poring over a map.

YOU HAVEN’T HEARD OF THE BAY OF MANTE, HAVE YOU? he said.

‘No, sir,’ said Mort.

FAMOUS SHIPWRECK THERE.

‘Was there?’

THERE WILL BE, said Death, IF I CAN FIND THE DAMN PLACE.

Mort

The wizards were civilized men of considerable education and culture. When faced with being inadvertently marooned on a desert island they understood immediately that the first thing to do was place the blame.

The Last Continent

The best one:

‘All right,’ said Susan. ‘I’m not stupid. You’re saying humans need … fantasies to make life bearable.’

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

‘Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—’

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

‘So we can believe the big ones?’

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

‘They’re not the same at all!’

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET— Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME … SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what’s the point—’

MY POINT EXACTLY.

Hogfather

Edit: one more:

“Insofar as I may be heard by anything, which may or may not care what I say, I ask, if it matters, that you be forgiven for anything you may have done or failed to do which requires forgiveness. Conversely, if not forgiveness but something else may be required to insure any possible benefit for which you may be eligible after the destruction of your body, I ask that this, whatever it may be, be granted or withheld, as the case may be, in such a manner as to insure your receiving said benefit. I ask this in my capacity as your elected intermediary between yourself and that which may not be yourself, but which may have an interest in the matter of your receiving as much as it is possible for you to receive of this thing, and which may in some way be influenced by this ceremony. Amen.”

A couple of points:

1.

Israel is a country where the same drivers who cuss you and flip you the bird will immediately pull over and offer you all forms of help if you look like you need it.

That is no longer true.

2.

I prefer his version of this list from the early sixties. it was different, more innocent.

3.

Sad that people find the need to downvote anything nonpolitical in this subreddit.

I'm not a big fan of our music sadly. But still, living here you can't help but get attached to a few songs. (IOW, just a couple of songs I have heard in the last week :)):

Shlomo Artzi - We don't need.

Naomi Shemer - I haven't loved enough.

Ethnix - Tutim.

Uzi Chitman - Adon Olam.
