My dad and I, our sophomore years in high school by chromadosein pics

[–]darkskies 5 points6 points ago

You know the strange thing is that it doesn't appear to affect just appearance. My daughter looks about 80% like me, however her thinking processes the same way that I do. My wife gets jealous of us sometimes because we know what the other is thinking because we are usually thinking the same thing. Usually when we are all together, one of us speaks and the other thinks or says "I was just getting ready to say that."

Me, too. I just hate seeing every fifth tweet of his posted and upvoted to high heaven. Most of the time what he tweeted wasn't especially witty or insightful. It was just NDT being NDT. But

I, too, would like to see an AMA for Wheezywaiter. My daughter and I have anticipated many an "Explosion Wednesday."

Well, here is an example of what I mean by changing the Bible to fit their concept. The JW's centralized around their preaching activity. They like to suggest that people preached about Jehovah even before Jesus. There is a scripture that the JW's like to use about the people prior to the flood taking "no note", suggesting that Noah and his family preached to people to warn them of the coming flood. That translation is bogus. Every other translation says that the people "did not know", meaning Yahweh took them by surprised and slew them all with water.

But that doesn't fit with their teaching that Jehovah always warns people - with preaching - before he kills them (because he's nice, you know).

So the number of people that JW's say will go to heaven is 144,000. That is based off some twisted logic they apply to a scripture in Revelation. You see, every other thing in Revelation is considered to be figurative. Every vision, every number, every event ... Except for that one number. And that is the number that they say represents the people that will go to (or already are in) heaven. Everyone else will live forever on Earth.

As for why I don't just come out and say it: There is no honorable way to leave the Jehovah's Witnesses. They practice shunning, which creates a very difficult situation.

They are very heavy on both the old testament and the new testament. I have found their "translation" of the old testament to actually be better than most in terms of being faithful to the original text. It's not

Their translation of the new testament is an abomination. There are so many things in it that they have changed completely or modified to fit their doctrine that it boggles the mind.

My father doesn't go to the meetings anymore, either. He stopped maybe 10-12 years ago. My mother doesn't go very often, either. My father realized that it is bullshit. I think my mother still believes somewhat, but no longer believes that the Governing Body is the end-all, be-all of the universe as they would have you believe. So she shows up for the Memorial and the occasional assembly or convention, but that is it.

No, and I never never tried, even during those years when I pretty much convinced myself that the religion was at least mostly true.

Not very strong at all. They are an embarrassment, according to my wife. I never encourage them to read the literature or watch their videos or anything else. I do, however, encourage them to read and watch everything else and not to just accept something just because someone says it is true, even if it comes from me.

On a percentage basis, hardly ever. However, it does work on occasion, so this is worth the effort, in the eyes of the Watchtower. Remember that the organization isn't spending any of their own money for the effort, so no matter how many millions of hours people waste trying to find someone who wants to become a JW, it's not the organization's time or money that is being lost.

It was never really that difficult for me. Before my parents joined in the early 80s, they were not religious at all. I am not even sure that they even believed in a god. We never went to a church of any kind nor had any discussions about God. I was heavily into scienc-y things as a kid and Cosmos was one of my favorite TV programs way back then. I sort of always believed that when we die, we just ... die. Like the mosquito you just squashed.

I appreciate the sentiment. And what has kept me dangling along is the nightmare of family issues that would result from my doing so. My kids are in their teens now and I am thinking that I just need to hold on for a little bit longer. I don't see them volunteering to stick around and then that will be my cue as well.

I have been very careful to encourage logical and rational thinking while sort of pretending to go along with the hive mind in speech (not actions). They seem to be pretty much going through the motions as well. I was worried that they would see me as some sort of flaming hypocrite, but I think they recognize the unfortunate situation I have placed myself in and are going along with it as well.

The only "holidays" that the Witnesses are really allowed to celebrate are the "Memorial" of Christ's death (which we just did this past Thursday), and wedding anniversaries. Don't ask me why anniversaries are allowed when other celebrations are not ... They have some faulty logic on that one.

The main reason is a logical one. That Christmas has nothing at all to do with the birth of Jesus, if he actually ever existed at all. It's logic that I am okay with. Observing the holiday just because everyone else does doesn't seem like a valid reason to do so. They will go on to tell you of its pagan origins and later that is how some of their logic regarding other Witness beliefs falls apart.

The main difference is the JW subservience to the Governing Body. That is where they get all of their direction. The Bible is secondary to anything the GB says.

I used to go regularly. My wife was indoctrinated from birth so it's a little difficult to get to her through regular conversation.

There is no teaching of hell. Probably the worst part is that they teach you that you will be destroyed along with the other 7 billion people of earth if you don't do everything their Governing Body tells you.
