Back in the 1920s there was a candy bar named Chicken Dinner.

Hey guys, Coming to the Danville/ Lexington area for the weekend.. What should I do?? by Ohioisforthehomelessin Kentucky

[–]darkon 0 points1 point ago

You could go to the Kentucky Theater in Lexington. They generally show films you wouldn't normally see at mainstream theaters. Both movies they're showing this weekend have pretty good reviews. I wouldn't mind seeing them myself.

Fort Boonesborough isn't far away. I haven't been there for at least 25 years, so I no longer know what it's like, but it should be reasonably interesting. (I should go. I hadn't realized it had been so long.)

If you end up in Richmond after the fort, try Madison Garden. I used to hang out there when I was in college back in the 1980s; since then they've branched out into being a restaurant as well as a bar. Probably more of a restaurant nowadays. Again, another place I need to revisit.

If you're interested in target shooting you could go to the Gun Warehouse and rent a gun. There are probably other ranges around Lexington or maybe even Danville, but since I'm not a Lexingtonian, that's the only one I know of offhand.

Downvote. The entire article that contains this picture was just posted yesterday. I don't normally care much about reposts, but at least let a few days go by -- and repost the entire thing, not just one picture from it.

He could have been paraphrasing Oliver Cromwell:

The reference is to Oliver Cromwell, who famously wrote to the synod of the Church of Scotland on August 5, 1650 saying

Ah, good, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Looks like a good deal. I can't really tell from the picture, but aren't they hanging a bit low? I think I see some holes next to the seat that might indicate that they can be raised somewhat. I'd be concerned that the one on the right-hand side might touch the tailpipe and get burnt.

Looks like a great bike for long, straight interstate riding, if you like lying on your stomach while you ride. Otherwise, I think it's just mechanical masturbation.

Chimpanzees and orangutans really do have personalities "like people", researchers say. by nomdewebin nature

Even dogs have distinct personalities, so even though I've never met a chimpanzee, I don't find it at all surprising that they have personalities, too.

People always lament bad film adaptations of good books. But what are some examples of superior cinematic adaptations? by CheatasaurusRexin literature

[–]darkon 4 points5 points ago

I first read A Clockwork Orange in a library copy that had the final chapter, and was later a bit perturbed when I bought my own copy and that chapter was missing. I'm with Burgess here: I think it makes it a better book, although that may be because that's how I read it first, before I saw the movie. However, it doesn't bother me that the movie leaves that out, because it's the kind of thing I expect a movie to do, and things that work well in a book don't always play well in a movie.

Red Alert is a decent but forgettable book, unlike the movie, which is a masterpiece of satire. It may have been shocking when it was first published (unless you were a science fiction reader), but now it's interesting mainly for being a look at the Cold War, for being the basis for Dr Strangelove, and a pathbreaker for many other nuclear war novels that followed. I read it about a year ago and liked it, but little has remained with me. It's a quick, easy read, so if you get a chance at it, I don't think you'll regret it.

Bad reason: clear glass looks like water. Water is a liquid, so glass is a liquid, too.

I recently learned that The Wizard of Oz is the ultimate chick flick, because it's about two women trying to kill each other over shoes. :-)

I read 1421 out of curiousity. The author saw evidence of Chinese everywhere, so much so that thinking of it now, he reminds me of the Ancient Aliens guy who sees evidence of aliens everywhere.
