What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

That you lose a mysterious 21 grams when you die. This was a flawed experiment done in the early 1900s link.

Also, living off campus is much cheaper, but you will have to try a lot harder to make friends.

Apply to OSAP early so that you know what your budget looks like in first year. Also, applying to OSAP too late will disqualify you from the Queen Elizabeth scholarship.

This. Do not waste money on textbooks. See if you can download copies, buy international versions (biblio.com) for $30, check amazon. If nothing else wait until the first day of class to find out if the professor is going to use the textbook.

Everyone buys the chemistry textbook in first year and most people only use it for the damn periodic table in the back cover.

This depends on if you live at home during co-op. If you don't then you will be hard pressed able to pay for 8 months of living + 4 months of tuition.

Don't assume you will get these things, I have gone through the appeals process and ended up with nothing and no explanation as to why not. You also have to wait a few weeks from the time you file to the time you get to talk to them, so file your osap EARLY.

How difficult is electrical engineering? by sstteeffin waterloo

[–]danthrax 3 points4 points ago

I recently graduated from Computer Engineering, so I will do my best to answer you.

You don't have to be a genius to pass, but it is a difficult and high workload program program. It takes hard work and dedication and there are times when you have back to back projects, assignments, and exams without time to stop in between. I think the key to doing well is being interested and motivated enough by the subject material to be able to work through all the math and physics.

You will have to learn a lot in very little time, much faster than high school. If you are not motivated or interested in the subject material then you will find yourself up against an impossible wall. The program is typically made up of students like yourself who were in the top of their class in high school, but it's not full of prodigies.

If you think this is the program for you and are up for the challenge then you should go for it, you may never find out what you are truly made of otherwise!

Its a theming of the top bar on Reddit for a subreddit who has done a good job of bringing more people to the website. I don't know why you feel so entitled to have reddit operate YOUR way, but if they want to recognize people who bring in lots of new users then they are allowed to.

You sure are a grumpy person.

It's still in a different country. Most Canadians live within 240 km (150 miles) from the US border, does that mean they're essentially americans?

The competition was open to countries with higher education around the world, I'm sorry that it was mostly north americans who were interested. Maybe that will inspire more competition from international schools next time.

so... What do you REALLY think of UW? by CaseProtagin uwaterloo

[–]danthrax 10 points11 points ago

As an Engineering graduate of Waterloo, I'm proud to have gone there. It really does have a great reputation out in the industry. When you're immersed in Waterloo for so long its hard to take a step back and realize the most important part of your journey: your peers.

Many people complain that the lab equipment is outdated, course material is disorganized, etc. etc. but at the end of the day the environment you're in is one where you are surrounded by many smart motivated people who then go out in the world and accomplish a great deal. I've learned a lot from my classmates especially those who are highly motivated by the material we studied together. Whether it is intentional or not, many of my frustrations while at Waterloo prepared me really well for my career. Students from UW have a reputation in the industry of pretty much being able to handle anything.

When I interviewed for one of my co-op jobs in the US, the director of engineering for the team told me "All of our best interns have come from Waterloo". Considering the number of high quality institutions in the US in concert with its world-dominant tech sector, it's pretty amazing that Waterloo is up there.

In closing, Waterloo sucks but it produces great people and if you are a career oriented person studying in a comprehensive field then it is absolutely the right place for you.

If you find Metro to be such a jarring experience then you can pin your most commonly used programs to your task bar. If you do this you will rarely need to go to into Metro.

My Bad Experience at Campus Pizza, letting you know service you can expect by DillonJMcGuirein waterloo

[–]danthrax -1 points0 points ago

I don't know, everyone says campus pizza sucks but I never got sick of it all the way to graduation. There's something addicting about the greasy shittyness of the pizza that makes it delicious, especially when you're hammered or hungover.

Me and my girlfriend still go back there and order a pizza when I'm back in Waterloo, I don't think I'll ever get sick of the place. Maybe its the first year nostalgia seeping into the crust, but my girlfriend likes it too and she never went to Waterloo.

I used to work at Tim Horton's and the first time I double toasted a bagel I let it go through twice at normal speed. If you do this the bagel will be charred black and inedible. You have to run it through the second time at a faster speed.

I also worked night shift. One night I found out that if you run it through three times it will catch on fire. Heheheheh.

What to do when you get an interview for a job you realize you now don't want? by falcon_gamerin uwaterloo

[–]danthrax 0 points1 point ago

My strategy for this was to practice being overconfident. This meant taking a strong stance on something that I didn't really know the answer to. It wasn't bombing the interview because I would give good answers to things I actually knew about, but the interviewer could pick up that I had this weird soft-skill problem of insisting on having the right answer when I didn't.

I can't make any statement about whether this was a good idea or not, its just what I did a couple of times.
