If you strike me down... by cyuin Anarchism

[–]cyu[S] 0 points1 point ago

Our silence will never be powerful, despite the powers that be assuring us that if we just keep quiet it will someday work out.

Agreed. There's a difference between being silent and being silenced. When oppressors feel like they have no choice but to resort to the latter, then they'll be damned if they do and damned if they don't xD

Explaining jokes takes half the fun out of it, but in the first part the caption implies that by making martyrs out of anarchists, pro-capitalists sparked a universal movement against themselves. If you didn't watch the movie, that first caption is a quote by Kenobi.

The caption in the second part is actually a quote by one of the martyred anarchists.

Argentina is not making many friends internationally by soberlookin Economics

"A makes criticism P. A is also guilty of P. Therefore, P is dismissed."

Actually, that's not quite what we have here. As evidenced by http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/CIAtimeline.html the American regime has a history of attempting to suppress leftist movements. The article at http://soberlook.com/2012/05/argentina-is-not-making-many-friends.html is merely another example of the continued history.

ELI5: What the people of Greece want with regards to the Austerity Measures? by clebo99in explainlikeimfive

[–]cyu 0 points1 point ago

I don't know what that would do to Greece in the short/long term.

One actual scenario:

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-take/

The people rioted. Banks were attacked. History experienced "the largest sovereign debt default in world history."

As workers gathered outside closed businesses, they were saying forget the back wages they were owed, they should just take the factory...

You might check out what Iceland did, or even the concept of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odious_debt

Basically you tell creditors they can go take a short hike off a steep cliff (or in more "everyday" terms, declare bankruptcy like many individuals and corporations do).

Oh noes, they're going to ruin their credit rating! Well, when your people are dying left and right, an awesome credit rating 15 years down the line isn't worth much if you aren't alive to see it.

Why, In Response to Anger About Austerity Cuts, Did the Greeks Just Vote in A Far-Right Pro Austerity Party? by [deleted]in politics

[–]cyu 1 point2 points ago

While the Greek socialist party did float the supposedly "radical" idea of having the Greek people vote on the austerity conditions that the EU was forcing on the Greek gov't, to the socialist party's discredit they did an Obama-like cave-in and refused to put the draconian austerity measures to a vote of the people.

Yep - that's because Greece is a minor player in the world of geopolitics. The Greek people do not control their politics (at least not when it comes to "important" decisions). Even their politicians don't control their politics. Considering Greek political history, the argument could be made that their political decisions are just a dog and pony show to hide who's really putting on the pressure from behind the scenes.

1947 Greece — President Truman requests military aid to Greece to support right-wing forces fighting communist rebels. For the rest of the Cold War, Washington and the CIA will back notorious Greek leaders with deplorable human rights records.

1965 Greece — With the CIA’s backing, the king removes George Papandreous as prime minister. Papandreous has failed to vigorously support U.S. interests in Greece.

1967 Greece — A CIA-backed military coup overthrows the government two days before the elections. The favorite to win was George Papandreous, the liberal candidate. During the next six years, the "reign of the colonels" — backed by the CIA — will usher in the widespread use of torture and murder against political opponents. When a Greek ambassador objects to President Johnson about U.S. plans for Cypress, Johnson tells him: "F**k your parliament and your constitution."

Why, In Response to Anger About Austerity Cuts, Did the Greeks Just Vote in A Far-Right Pro Austerity Party? by [deleted]in politics

[–]cyu 0 points1 point ago*

Because the socialist party of Greece proved itself to be just as worthless, untrustworthy, corrupt, and not interested in representing common people as our Democratic Party here in the US is.

Indeed in most nations that pretend to be "democratic" when there is a large gap between rich and poor, all the mainstream parties have been corrupted by money. It's unavoidable since there would be no other way for them to win elections.

Even if the party is supposedly named "socialist" - there's no way for it to survive in such systems without compromising nearly all their principles. The only way for such parties to actually be socialist would be to operate within a system in which large gaps in wealth do not affect elections.

Kind of a chicken and egg problem...

Looks like Greece had a bit of bad luck mapping economic equality to democracy...

Kids, when you were small, Daddy took some money from Mr. Jones. Daddy gambled the money away. Mr. Jones wants his money back. Daddy has no money to pay him. Daddy is going to take you kids out of school on Monday. You will now go to a new place. In this new place you don't need teachers any more. You can instead make shoes! Isn't that exciting?! You get to make shoes all day! Daddy will take that money to pay Mr. Jones. Daddy might even have some left over to go gambling again.

Yes, if you assume that those with iPhones tend to be from an economic class that can afford iPhones, then one would expect actual results to lean more towards parties supported by those who cannot afford iPhones.

However, middle class and upper middle class is still a huge leap away from the ruling class. If the ruling class has decided that they are going to ram through austerity in order to prop up their banks and control of the economy, then publishing false poll results skewed towards pro-austerity parties would be strategically important for preparing the general public to accept false election results that show the victory of austerity.

[–]cyu 14 points15 points ago

And this is why I take the anarchist label.

Of all people, anarchists more than any other should know they are not personally responsible for the actions of other people claiming to be anarchists. Are we supposed to act like anybody's representatives or leaders? In other political ideologies, maybe - but that should the furthest from the norm within anarchism.

You don't have to represent anybody but yourself. You don't have to lead anybody but yourself. You don't have to follow anybody but yourself. You don't have to take responsibility for anybody but those you choose to.

It always reminds me of what the political wing of the IRA did when I watched their TV spokespeople as an impressionable young kid. If there was a car bombing or some other act of violence, they would say something like, "While I personally do not agree with the violence in this attack, I do understand the root motivations of their actions." Then they went on to explain just what it was the IRA was fighting for.

Tactically brilliant I thought.

Is no one else questioning the validity of this article's claims?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_flag

False flag operations are covert operations designed to deceive in such a way that the operations appear as though they are being carried out by other entities.

The replacement of Iran's Anglo-Persian Oil Company with five American oil companies and the 1953 Iranian coup d'état in 1953 was the consequence of the U.S. and British-orchestrated false flag operation, Operation Ajax, to depose the democratically elected leader of Iran, Mohammed Mosaddeq.

The planned, but never executed, 1962 Operation Northwoods plot by the U.S. Department of Defense for a war with Cuba involved scenarios such as fabricating the hijacking or shooting down passenger and military planes, sinking a U.S. ship in the vicinity of Cuba, burning crops, sinking a boat filled with Cuban refugees, attacks by alleged Cuban infiltrators inside the United States, and harassment of U.S. aircraft and shipping and the destruction of aerial drones by aircraft disguised as Cuban MiGs. These actions would be blamed on Cuba, and would be a pretext for an invasion of Cuba and the overthrow of Fidel Castro's communist government. It was authored by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but then rejected by President John F. Kennedy.

On February 19, 2011, Indiana Deputy Prosecutor Carlos Lam sent a private email to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker suggesting that he run a "'false flag' operation" to counter the protests against Walker's proposed restrictions on public employees' collective bargaining rights. "If you could employ an associate who pretends to be sympathetic to the unions' cause to physically attack you (or even use a firearm against you), you could discredit the unions," read the email. It went on to say that the effort "would assist in undercutting any support that the media may be creating in favor of the unions." The press had acquired a court order to access all of Walker's emails and Lam's email was exposed. At first, Lam vehemently denied it, but eventually admitted it and resigned.

During a 1981 interview, former CIA agent Michael Townley explained that Ignacio Novo Sampol, member of CORU, an anti-Castro organization, had agreed to commit the Cuban Nationalist Movement in the kidnapping, in Buenos Aires, of a president of a Dutch bank. After returning to the US, Novo Sampol sent Townley a stock of paper, used to print pamphlets in the name of "Grupo Rojo" (Red Group), an imaginary Argentine Marxist terrorist organization, which was to claim credit for the kidnapping of the Dutch banker. the pamphlets were distributed in Mendoza and Córdoba in relation with false flag bombings perpetrated by SIDE agents, which had as their aim to accredit the existence of the fake Grupo Rojo. However, the SIDE agents procrastinated too much, and the kidnapping ultimately was not carried out.

My parents were always liberal leaning and they knew early on I was interested in "economics and saving the world" - my mom was more concerned that I was just being an armchair revolutionary.

As far as friends, I created my facebook profile with this under political views: "Far left... no further left than that... no keep going... ok, yeah, that's about right". (Hi guys, in case you found this =) ...that and my FB posts alternate between leftist news and general interesting stuff in a "secret" attempt to convert them =]

Does the minimum wage illicit poor working conditions? by pherudessin sociology

[–]cyu 0 points1 point ago

Correlated. If employees are being paid minimum wage, it is a sign that the employer has enough power over them to do so. If the employer is both able and willing to exploit his employees, then it isn't surprising that poor working conditions are also part of his program.
