Wordfeud is great, clean, independent and it looks good. I wouldn't put that Zynga shit on my phone.

How UK rates in growth and unemployment compare to the USA (Nice Graphs included) by jim6532in unitedkingdom

no, if they had implemented an austerity programme to increase unemployment and cut taxes for the rich, they'd be doing just as bad as we are.

Young people increasingly shut out of first jobs by syukin unitedkingdom

The usual comments, a summary:

  • If everyone was an engineer we wouldn't have these problems
  • I know someone with a job, so this can't be true
  • Youngsters have too high expectations in wanting to be paid for work

You claimed the experience of your "other half" disproves jomkr's claim that state school pupils are disadvantaged in applying to Oxford. We've already established you're a moron.

Tens of thousands get AAA+ at A Level every year and thousands apply to Oxford. Maybe a few hundred people get a first in Subject X and of those, maybe twenty apply to a relevant postgrad course at Oxford. You're not comparing like with like.

Oxford post grad

Not the same thing at all as being an undergrad. The main criteria for admission to postgrad courses are a) strong, relevant first degree b) ability to pay. So if there is any competition for a place on a course, it is insignificant compared to any undergraduate course and especially courses like law and medicine.

Private rents rise again, says LSL. by weblypistolin unitedkingdom

[–]cylinderhead 0 points1 point ago

Humour me. On a £50k mortgage I'd guess the repayments, interest only, are about £350 a month - so about £150 a month before costs based on the rent. Depending on how poor a condition your property is in, additional costs could be as little as £6 per month for the annual gas safety certificate plus a max of 10% to a letting agent, so I'd guess about £1200 a year? Not bad for passive income.

I did wonder. I know Reddit loves Slaughterhouse Five too, but like many of the others it's a safe, orthodox choice for an occasional reader's "favourite book"

That Wordsworth edition of The Three Musketeers - are they still available new? Or is that your friend's personal copy of his favourite book? (In which case - that's some friend!)

the point about the resignation is that what he wants is something which is not within his power to obtain - it's reliant on the agency of others. You can create it but you can't buy or force desire.

it's a myth that English / History / Media degrees have poor employability for well paid, graduate roles. I keep mentioning figures that show that more English graduates get jobs than Maths grads, should probably bookmark them for reposting purposes!

DBreak's number 4 is the big one. Oxbridge graduates are more successful because they are disproportionately from wealthy, privileged backgrounds, with established networks in industry. The same gap doesn't exist between, say, a Russell Group University and a former Polytechnic, even though the quality of the degree may be different.

it's virtually a miracle to get on a competitive graduate scheme at the first attempt, there are always so many applications that it's the luck of the draw whether yours even gets looked at. After the target's been met, the remaining seventy or eighty applications that need to be checked off might be brilliant but they'll just get the old select all - reject treatment.
