It's a pretty long moment...

Though many anti-abortion folks are absolutists, and would put the babies life ahead of the woman's in cases where the woman's life is in danger, even for first trimester.

41% of Americans identify as "pro-choice," a record-low in Gallup polling by es-335in Foodforthought

[–]cyantist 4 points5 points ago

It's the complexity. Pro-lifers tend to believe that babies have souls, or anyway count as full-fledged people and should be protected, a priority that outweighs choice. That is, they would be pro-choice if a life weren't on the line.

  • They're pro-life, and "anti-choice" is a partisan disparagement label. They aren't against choice, they are against killing, and captivated by their in-group rhetoric on moral priorities.

I agree with you that they must be "anti- priority of a woman's right to deny a baby the use of their body", and I agree that many pro-lifers tend toward right-wing in that they demonize sex and their rhetoric is soaked in misguided moralisms such as "if you didn't want to be pregnant, you shouldn't have had sex" and "murderers!!!" and much contradiction (bombing abortion clinics, believing in just war (Iraq, really?)).

I believe abortions are fine (but costly in more ways than one and pregnancies should be prevented or planned). The important thing is to recognize the perspectives that others are taking on.

/r/linguistics would tell you that the meaning of 'pass away' has broadened over time in usage. It's a polite way to refer to any death now. It can be thought of as "pass on to the other side of the curtain between the world of the living and the world of the afterlife"-

"Terrorism Plot" or Entrapment? The Case of the NATO 3 by jjeremyharrelsonin worldpolitics

[–]cyantist 0 points1 point ago

You know, that's fair from a linguistic standpoint. But from a legal one it's total and complete bunk, with broad and indistinguishable definitions serving to legitimize the abject demonization of people who already fit into pre-existing legal definition. You don't want the government doing the whole in-group out-group thing with application of the law - of course it's going to happen anyway, but this is where people start turning around and pointing to times when the police use the systemic use of violence or intimidation to coerce, with ideological aim.

Do we really want to call the police terrorists? They more closely fit the definition because the police (say, in Oakland) will use terror tactics on specific groups in the populace, whereas black bloc is using terror tactics on institutions. It's not even intended terror - i.e. they are not attempting to incite terror in the police force. Though they have ideological aim, they are attacking to incite anger instead, to provoke a response that galvanizes the populace against the police (highly misguided, I'm sure), to distract. Kind of besides the point, I suppose, but terrorism used to be something discussed in terms of civilian susceptibility. You don't call warfare between soldiers terrorism.

But in any case, the problem is that it's a new legal definition with high headroom for punishment and no special nuance of application.

"Terrorism Plot" or Entrapment? The Case of the NATO 3 by jjeremyharrelsonin worldpolitics

[–]cyantist -1 points0 points ago

Intent to riot or attack is not the same thing as intent to terrorize. It shows that the government is in the wrong in some way and overcompensating. When they overapply the 'terrorist' label then it erodes the meaning, and begs for stronger emotional responses against people who should be charged with their actual crimes and not made up ones.

Also, arrest 9, charge 3? Hm - doesn't speak well for police surveillance.

/r/Chicago seems to have a lot of pride in the police. That's cool.

Yet the police state is not about police violence - the police did act with restraint. That's because they know it's very important to get a positive review.

The police state is creeping in, and the sheer numbers of police and the tools they are acquiring are evidence of this. It's not about "oh we are so oppressed", it's about "oh shit, the U.S. is gearing up, militarizing civilian life - class warfare will eventually hit the streets in a hard way".

Here is the actual police state objectionist viewpoint: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2012/may/20/welcome-nato-chicago-police-state?CMP=twt_fd
