Witt equivalence! Some fun things with quadratic forms and some algebra.

I would argue that his original use of the regularity lemma, proving the Erdős–Turán conjecture, is also quite well-known.

The website is not entirely clear (to me), and does not mention that Gowers's Speech was intended for non-mathematicians---link provided for anyone interested.

Szemeredi is a very interesting person, and I think the award was well deserved.

When was the last time you were this excited for a game? by HRPin Diablo

[–]coldie48 0 points1 point ago

I remember this, the wait, obtaining one of those preview trailer CD's, the news about the source leak, everything. Then it came out.. I rushed home and was blown away by it (although the first one moved me more).

I'm hoping Diablo 3 will live up to all this hype, I'm just not sure since I don't have a beta key to see. I'm sure I'll spend days and days playing just like Diablo II.

Alright Reddit, math teacher here, what are the best math and science facts you know (with sources)? by masterfooin math

[–]coldie48 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps a bit on sets and binomial coefficients? Perhaps that there are sum n choose i = 2n subsets? Might tie in with your previous talk of cards.

What is the most useful theorem, identity or principle you know? by enken90in math

[–]coldie48 1 point2 points ago

Fermat's last theorem! Want to prove that all nth roots of 2 are irrational for n > 2? Just consider an + an = bn !

Other than that, considering maximal counterexamples (as in proofs of Ore's/Dirac's theorems).

Probability problem that my friends and I are arguing over... by BrandyBin math

[–]coldie48 1 point2 points ago

As I understand it there are 50 cards each of which has 1 of 5 possible symbols on it. A holds 2, B holds 4. C thinks of her favourite symbol, and takes a card from A or B hoping to see this symbol on the card.

Are you then asking if it makes a difference if she draws from person A or from person B? If so, no it does not make a difference, unless she can read one of the people better. Both cases have the same probability as if she drew from the top of the deck.

And if i misunderstood what you said, please go ahead and let me know.

How to lose your fear of tensor products - Tim Gowers by coldie48in math

[–]coldie48[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is true, and if you only want to worry about the resulting space, then that is fine. However the tensor product (and the article) tells us how this space is created---which could be the confusing part.

I agree, this sounds more like direct sums (and direct products in parentheses).

To r/math, what is one simple area of math that causes you an unreasonable amount of trouble? by Erik_1in math

Probability, and statistics.

Oh and for the love of god I can never remember which way to index matrices. I'll be looking at something like representation theory and I'll have to look it up just to be sure.

Rubik's Cube scrambling problem by Duckkin math

[–]coldie48 0 points1 point ago

One way to go about this would be to calculate the number of states where two same colour pieces neighbour, then the number of states where no two neighbouring pieces are the same colour, then try to show that for large n there's something close to a uniform distribution amongst the states.

It's not a uniform distribution exactly, but maybe its something close to it? I don't know.

Rubik's Cube scrambling problem by Duckkin math

[–]coldie48 1 point2 points ago

The way I interpret this question is: Does a random scrambling (lets say n turns, randomly, for some large n) give you two same-coloured neighbouring pieces? How does this depend on n?

I would assume the answer is yes, you get two same-colour pieces next to each other. I'm not sure of the details.

Some advice for a first year math major. by coolsmith3991in math

[–]coldie48 2 points3 points ago

See if your school offers a course on set theory, maybe on logic. I would recommend this if you want to learn more about cardinality-like stuff. If you liked abstract vector spaces and just structures constructed abstractly, then an abstract algebra course could be interesting.

Don't devote yourself to one area until you've looked around. If you do end up going into math, you'll be in your area of expertise for a long time, so be sure to look around!

What happens to students with low averages? by EIGHT_in UBC

You can get in later too. If you're worried, pick something with less requirements for now, you can keep applying for biochem, and if your marks don't improve then just do something else for now, and work upwards.
