Busting the carbon and cost myths of Germany's nuclear exit by DonManuelin energy

[–]chobit 5 points6 points ago

The article also completely glosses over the fact that the resulting reduced exports (70TWh -> 7TWh) had to be produced elsewhere. I don't know how much of that was from coal, but I think it's safe to guess that the number is nonzero.

Yes, I know of solar winds, I don't really think it affects the joke.

Obviously the leeward side, we must be windward, otherwise we'd smell them.

That might make more sense, but then the pun wouldn't work.

Six Myths About Ray Tracing by orangeduckin programming

[–]chobit 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the info. I do recall reading that one of the movies after Cars didn't use it, I really thought it was Ratatouille. Do you have any idea which on it may have been?

Pixar has been using ray tracing in newer films. Cars was the first to use it, though I don't think Ratatouille did.

Well, according to some Christian apologists, the fact that places described in the bible exist prove its reliability. So obviously, Hercules is real, too. I'm hoping by extension this means Xena is real.

How far would taxing churches go towards balancing the budget? by hipptrippin economy

[–]chobit 4 points5 points ago*

Non-profits aren't necessarily tax-exempt, only those focused around charity work for which the money does not go to benefit the members. Some churches might qualify for this and as I said in another comment, that's fine. Others would not.

Country clubs and co-ops are good examples of non-profits that aren't tax exempt (and I would probably also colloquially have described these as businesses). My choice of the word business was bad, though, you're right.

[–]chobit 5 points6 points ago

If the churches are organized around a charitable cause such that they would qualify for tax exempt status if it were a secular organization, then I have absolutely no qualm that. The problem is, "advancement of religion" shouldn't be considered a charitable act.

[–]chobit 9 points10 points ago

The whole point is that not taxing churches is actually antithetical to the idea of a separation between church and state.

Because the government has the power to declare what is a religion and what isn't, and because that grants the benefit of being tax free, they are passing law with regard to religion. If the gov't says "catholocism is a religion" but then "scientology is not" (I know it actually is recognized), well, that's state supported religion right there. It may be multiple state supported religions, but it's basically the same thing. Religion shouldn't get special treatment relative to any other business.

Panel 1 is so true, it's never news when giant mutant rats eat children; it's just another day in the city.

I've seen some encounters there, too, but not so much over this sort of bumping, more like people blocking the way.

I like the idea of the comic and the first three panels, but having lived/worked in Manhattan for years and knowing the last panel is stereotypical, I've still never seen any reaction besides ignoring it or a quick 'sorry' or 'excuse me'.

Bart Ehrman Responds to Richard Carrier on the Historicity of Jesus by mavnormanin Freethought

And I do doubt it. I don't accept the claim that Jesus existed, only the possibility.

[–]chobit 2 points3 points ago*

Ehrman's characterization of Richard Carrier and myth proponents in general is extremely dismissive and disrespectful. I agree that Carrier went a bit far in his response, but I completely understand how he would take it personally.

Edit: Full disclosure, I'm a Jesus agnostic. I don't think burden has been satisfied enough to state that Jesus existed, but I don't doubt the strong possibility that he did.

Of course homoiconicity is the point. You can't say the point is "read" and feel superior to other people, that's such a simple word. Saying "homoiconicity" lets you feel like a badass.

Just like being an only child isn't a great experience for everyone, having siblings isn't, either. It can work, or not work, either way.
