GPS from 1992 Sony PYXIS by duhhhhhhhin geek

[–]chakalakasp 22 points23 points ago

AFAIK GPS has always been available for civilian use, it's just that the signal was altered a bit so that only the military could use it with precision. (The military knew how it was altered, and thus military devices could account for the changes). Civilian devices were lucky to get accuracy within a few hundred yards, as opposed to today's accuracy of within 30 feet. Clinton turned off the signal scrambling with an executive order, IIRC, under the assumption that the free market's ability to do cool things with GPS outweighed any concerns about someone using it to guide a missile to a friendly target. The GPS scrambling can be switched back on in an instant, anyhow. Glad that happened before 9/11, as I doubt anyone would have supported descrambling GPS after that.

Anderson Cooper cuts interview with 'Human Barbie' short by kelsbarin videos

Listen, I don't want my kids getting dirty underground meth and self-administering it. That's why from a very young age I taught them to make their own and I always help them use it.

Man ticketed for littering. And by littering, I mean dropping money on the ground by mistake while handing it to a homeless man by ElderCunninghamin offbeat

I guess the first panhandler got mad that the second panhandler got the money, so the first panhandler wrote him a ticket so that he could get paid, too.

Scam foiled by dash cam. by vileevilleviin JusticePorn

As someone who recently hydroplaned off a road, down a hill, through a fence, across 200 feet of pasture, and into a tree sideways, I really wish I had a dashcam. I mean if your going to to through something like that, you should at least get some karma.

Worldwide, I really doubt that most people possess guns because they think guns are just so darn fun to play with. Most of them have guns because they're fantastic weapons.

Guns exist because they're better than the previous projectile weapons, bows. They're so good that they made the gold standard weapon of the past several thousand years, the sword, obsolete and in doing so completely redefined warfare. The primary reason they are made to this day is because mankind is still rather fond of sticking people with the pointy end in order to get their way. If you own a gun, the paramount design consideration that went into your weapon was that it be able to explosively propel a spinning bolt of metal to lethal speeds with acceptable accuracy at a target, and said bolts are often designed to structurally fail upon impact in a way that does maximal damage to soft mammal tissues. It's disingenuous for anyone, gun owner or not, to suggest that guns have lots of other great uses beyond killing things or being a deterrent to things killing you. Sure, you can spend your whole life popping rounds into paper targets or blowing up beer cans, but that's not what they're made for.

I'm sure you would, however that is why they were invented & is what they are primarily useful for today - force or threat of force to other living things.

You can buy a car and use it primarily to do donuts in your front yard, but that's not why cars were invented and it's not what makes them useful.

Also, if you have a plan that allows you to select a pool of numbers to make free calls to, you should select your own Google Voice number as one of the freebies. When you call your own Google Voice number and enter your pin, you are given the option of dialing out. So while you would need to manually dial the number (no auto dial), you could effectively call any domestic number for free without using any minutes.

You seem to think this guy cares about their feelings. He has one goal: to get rightfully paid what he is due without having to go through the expense of hiring an attorney. Whether he was nice or he yelled at them or he danced the Moonwalk to make this happen, the point is that he accomplished his goal (legally) with minimal effort. This is called Really Good Negotiation. He came in hinting at a hand so strong the other guy immediately folded.

Do you think the end result would have been any better? Dude came in showing authority and that he knew the law, and walked out with what he wanted. Rhetorical kindness likely would not have served him as well as a negotiating tactic.

A mistake? "Gee sir, you must have tripped on the CTRL+A and the CTRL+C and the CTRL+V keys and then accidentally hit print 40,000 times! How ever did that happen?"

It does more than that. It allows for recovery of statutory damages, as well as recovery of attorneys fees and court costs from the infringer.
