Collegiate faculty group calls out Calipari by Iriestxin CollegeBasketball

[–]cgoof6 1 point2 points ago

i can understand that point of view. i think it's perfectly legitimate, though i am on the opposite end of that argument. i see those things as being good for his players. i don't think he should make any moves with the fans, the media, the ncaa or anybody else in mind. his job is to recruit basketball players and then prepare them to play, and everything that he does should be (and is) focused on their futures in basketball. since he is so good with drawing money and promoting his team, he gets great players, so that preparation becomes not just for the upcoming season, but for an entire career as a professional basketball player. i am personally quite sick of the cult of the noble student athlete and the wise, fatherly coach who prepares young men for life. don't get me wrong, this is a great thing, but it is most certainly not the end all and be all of collegiate athletics, especially with regards to players who have been forced into the ncaa when they probably should already be in the nba. john calipari is great at what he does. what he does is very different from traditional practices, but different is not better or worse, it's just different. i have no problem with people disliking his style, i just can't stand the holier-than-thou "your way is bad and wrong" posturing with regards to that style, to say nothing of the baseless accusations of cheating.

ah, you're right. i misinterpreted a statement from mark emmert saying that calipari plays inside the rules. i thought it was more general, but i think he was specifically referencing the use of one and dones. however, i think the point is still valid. the ncaa is the most overbearing, penalty-happy ruling body in the world, and they investigated the bejesus out of two of calipari's programs and couldn't find any evidence against him to even accuse him of wrongdoing, let alone convict him. with all of the wrongdoings circulating around other bigtime programs such as uconn and syracuse, the craziness this year at ucla, the recent issues at tennessee, the rumors about duke and on and on, with basically every big program in the country being somehow implicated in dicey activity within the last decade, it gets really old hearing people constantly harp on calipari as if he's some sort of singular basketball antichrist. do i think that calipari is a saint, or completely free from wrongdoing? absolutely not, but i also don't think that he runs programs that are any more "dirty" than any of the other big programs.

the proven cheating that the ncaa went out of their way to point out that calipari had absolutely nothing to do with in both cases? THAT proven cheating? what exactly is it that this proves?

similar for the red sox with jacoby ellsbury and carl crawford out with long-term injuries. they're also missing lackey and matsuzaka who make a lot, and their closer andrew bailey, though it's not like those guys would really help the win/loss stats.

And then I wondered how many professors messed up my grades by failbearsin self

[–]cgoof6 1 point2 points ago

i didn't have issues with curves per se, but it always irritated the hell out of me when as much as twenty percent of my grade would be "participation", with some vague explanation such as quality contributions to the classroom. not only did i have no idea how much credit, say, one insightful comment would get as opposed to asking clarifying questions or answering one of those obvious, leading questions, but it also led to tons of meaningless drivel being spewed by students who just wanted to talk constantly to pump up their participation grades. god how i hate everything about the participation requirement, at least for undergrad classes.

no they don't. the champions of the nba are called the nba champions, and the champions of the nfl are called the super bowl champions. there might be some people who refer to them as world champions, but those are not the names of the championships. and actually, they don't technically even call the mlb champions "world champions", they are called "world series champions".

UNC Basketball, Football players made up 39 percent of suspect classes in Academic Fraud Investigation. North Carolina - NewsObserver.com by ThaCarterin CollegeBasketball

[–]cgoof6 0 points1 point ago

this is very true. i went to middlebury college, a tiny liberal arts school in vermont that competes in the nescac. while it is a very respectable school academically, our biggest claim to fame football-wise is kicker steve hauschka (who didn't even spend his whole career there) and we don't have one for basketball. even there, there was one major in particular while i was there that was widely known to be the easiest, and if you took any classes in that department the odds were fantastic that it would be chock full of football players. it would also be chock full of slacker types. the point is that at every school in america, every student knows which classes and departments offer the easy classes, and people looking for easy grades who aren't really interested in challenging themselves academically flock to them. unless these courses exist for the specific reason of padding the grades of athletes, and somebody can PROVE that point, there's really nothing that can be done about this, and i'm not entirely sure that there's anything wrong with it anyways.

End of Indiana-Kentucky matchup shows need for reform in college hoops by reddit4in CollegeBasketball

[–]cgoof6 -1 points0 points ago

do you honestly believe that a game in indianapolis would ever be the difference between kentucky landing a recruit or not? it's not exactly like they've had much trouble these past few years, and i'm pretty sure that kentucky gets its very own nationwide "recruiting showcases" several times per year on espn and cbs and then again in the tournament. plus they can bring recruits to campus to watch games, so i really don't see how one game in indy would be some kind of dealbreaker for recruiting. an indy/louisville series was the first idea that was floated, but couldn't be made to work because freedom hall was unavailable and apparently louisville is refusing to let them use the yum center. compromise involves BOTH sides, and it seems to me that the only side being inflexible and saying "this way or nothing" is indiana. it definitely sucks that these games won't get to happen at least for the near future, but it's completely ridiculous that people are trying to turn an unfortunate budgetary conflict into "calipari doesn't like playing at assembly so he singlehandedly destroyed the whole series" (not saying you're one of them, but that vibe is out there).

this is very true. i would say that great jones street (and maybe falling man) are to delillo what the crying of lot 49 is to thomas pynchon, if that helps. a good primer/test case to get one's feet wet and see if they really want to take on one of the larger, more complex works.

this would be true if we could look at the kentucky basketball team as an individual entity. unfortunately, this isn't the case. at kentucky, just as at any other d1 school, there are really only one or two sports that actually bring in money. that money doesn't just go to the sport that brings it in (basketball money going to basketball, etc) but goes to the athletic department as a whole, who then have to support relatively useless things such as water polo etc. that amount to a large financial drain. in short, it's waaaaay more complicated than just "kentucky's basketball team brings in tons of money, so it's bullshit that they would cry poverty in the iu series", and a one-to-one comparison looking at just the basketball teams really doesn't work either. given all of the outrage over the loss of this series (which certainly didn't come as a shock) i see no reason to believe that kentucky isn't being honest when they say that there are financial concerns preventing the matchup to continue as-is. calipari may indeed not have been thrilled about going back to iu in a few years (and let's be honest, there isn't a coach in the country who would be psyched to see an away game at indiana on the schedule) but it really seems like a stretch to say that that was the determining factoring in ending such a bigtime, historic rivalry.

in addition to some of the other great suggestions here, i'd suggest pretty much anything by don delillo. each sentence of his is about as close to a work of art as a sentence can get. great jones street might be a good place to start, since it's relatively short and easy and deals with things like sex, drugs and rock and roll.

i'm not really sure how desiring to play neutral site games for revenue reasons, but offering to play every single one in indianapolis is not a rational, reasonable compromise.

Indiana v. Kentucky series done. by BongRips_andBaseHitsin CollegeBasketball

[–]cgoof6 1 point2 points ago

"not only calipari, but the staff, athletes and students at uk also all wanted this series to continue at neutral sites. now because crean doesn't get his way, one of college basketball's best rivalries starts to die." see how that works? this isn't just the fault of one side or the other. if anything, indiana are being the unreasonable ones, since twenty or so years ago THEY wanted to switch to neutral site games, and kentucky acquiesced to that desire against their own wishes in order to keep the rivalry alive. now indiana won't extend that same courtesy and we're going to just throw the entirety of the blame for this rivalry dying on kentucky? sure, seems fair...

Career-Long Character Arcs by jrapthejraptorin SquaredCircle

[–]cgoof6 2 points3 points ago

this is a great point. unfortunately, i don't think that wwe has necessarily embraced the totality of the arc, but it all makes perfect sense. it's just like a (real life) super rich kid who was always destined to be a rich ceo-type. they have their "screw daddy and the rules, i'm going to run away and be a badass phase", then that phase where they try to find their own footing and exceed/transcend what is expected of them on their own terms, and then finally the destiny is fulfilled and there they are running the multi-national company. christ, this is perfect. i can't believe it never occurred to me before, or that nobody has ever brought this up before (to my knowledge). your choice definitely gets my vote.

Are we seeing a new generation of wrestlers who actually understand what wrestling is all about? by HeelTurnin SquaredCircle

i agree with you on this one. honestly, i don't give a shit what reasons a guy had for getting into the business or what the guy looks like. i'm not going to dismiss a guy just because he has that monstrous bodybuilder sort of look to him or because he would have preferred to be a pro football player. i think the problem is when guys receive big pushes based solely on their looks (ezekiel jackson's title runs come to mind) rather than what they are capable of in the ring. i really like seeing big, strong dudes in the ring since it adds to the awe factor and the illusion that these guys really are just ass-kicking machines, but never at the expense of actual abilities. the size should be a bonus, not a requirement. actual ability (in the ring and on the mic) should be a requirement, not a bonus.

What do you think happens after Extreme Rules? by lewparkin SquaredCircle

it's also a bit of a strange message to send to the fans with regards to the roster as a whole. i mean, cena has been running roughshod over the entire roster (with the exception of punk recently) for years now, with his only losses being flukey by way of interference, cheating, etc. and they are always avenged almost immediately. however, all of these guys from the previous era seem to have zero problem coming back and immediately beating the hell out of him and getting wins. if all of this makes cena look bad/weak, what does it say about an entire roster that couldn't even dream of getting a clean win over cena?

if people would actually put some sort of description of their picture's content in the link rather than extremely vague things like "remember when..." or "can you imagine?" i would have no problem with all of the pictures/memes on the site. i hate having to click on dozens of links to various pictures (a few of which are great, but most of which are not) just to find out what they are. i agree with a lot of the people saying "upvote what is good, downvote what you don't like", but the problem is having to sift through all of it in order to find out what it is that i do or do not like.

i would be in favor of switching to self posts only. it's not like this kills people's ability to post images etc., as they can simply post the link in the comment. however, it does erase the incentive behind "karmawhoring" since self posts don't accumulate karma. this was a decision made some time back in the fitness subreddit, and the quality of submissions has (in my opinion) gone way up. for me, the appeal of this subreddit is the discussion, and i think that having so many meme/image type posts really wang the signal to noise ratio.
i can understand if this is not the preferred option, and if that's the case then fine. however, i really think that either "do nothing" or "switch to self posts" are the only viable options. any attempt to ban a specific type of post is going to be very futile, and only lead to slightly different labeling of the same sort of posts and a whole lot of discord about this post being banned while that one was allowed, a demand for clarification and/or change of the rules, and in no time we're right back here having this same discussion again. just look at what a pain in the ass the spoiler policy has been, and to me the idea of a spoiler is a whole lot more concrete and easy to follow than that of karmawhoring.
