I like that Ian take the monochromatic thing serious. This picture shows that the intimacy he still maintain the aesthetic integrity of its proposal. The world needs more Ians.

The first time I thought about atheism was in a class of ancient Egypt religion. I asked the teacher if anyone still believed in their religion and when the teacher said no, I started thinking about the validity of our contemporary religions. So, I'm all for the teaching of all religions. This is the same position advocated by Dennett in this passage in this lecture:

Here's my proposal. I'm going to just take a couple of minutes to explain it -- education in world religions, on world religions, for all of our children in primary school, in high school, in public schools, in private schools and in home schooling. So what I'm proposing is, just as we require reading, writing, arithmetic, American history, so we should have a curriculum on facts about all the religions of the world -- about their history, about their creeds, about their texts, their music, their symbolisms, their prohibitions, their requirements. And this should be presented factually, straightforwardly, with no particular spin, to all of the children in the country. And as long as you teach them that, you can teach them anything else you like. That, I think, is maximal tolerance for religious freedom. As long as you inform your children about other religions, then you may -- and as early as you like and whatever you like -- teach them whatever creed you want them to learn. But also let them know about other religions.

Now why do I say that? Because democracy depends on an informed citizenship. Informed consent is the very bedrock of our understanding of democracy. Misinformed consent is not worth it. It's like a coin flip; it doesn't count really. Democracy depends on informed consent. This is the way we treat people as responsible adults. Now, children below the age of consent are a special case. I'm going to use a word that Pastor Rick just used -- parents are stewards of their children. They don't own them. You can't own your children. You have a responsibility to the world, to the state, to them, to take care of them right. You may teach them whatever creed you think is most important, but I say you have a responsibility to let them be informed about all the other creeds in the world, too. The reason I've taken this time is I've been fascinated to hear some of the reactions to this. One reviewer for a Roman Catholic newspaper called it "totalitarian." It strikes me as practically libertarian. Is it totalitarian to require reading, writing and arithmetic? I don't think so. All I'm saying is -- facts. Facts only. No values, just facts about all the world's religions. Another reviewer called it "hilarious." Well, I'm really bothered by the fact that anybody would think that was hilarious. It seems to me to be such a plausible, natural extension of the democratic principles we already have, that I'm shocked to think anybody would find that just ridiculous. I know many religions are so anxious about preserving the purity of their faith among their children that they are intent on keeping their children ignorant of other faiths. I don't think that's defensible, but I'd really be pleased to get your answers on that -- any reactions to that -- later.

The problem was a huge confusion. The money was to come from Flamengo and from a partnership. Flamengo was paying his part, but the partnership wasn't (because Flamengo had broke some clause of the contract -- at least they said). But that's was over two months ago. For what I know everything is ok now. But he hasn't play well in six months (at Flamengo and at the nacional team) and everybody in Rio de Janeiro knows that he go out every night and sometimes take the young players, that are now appearing, with him.The team is apathetic and the media think this is due to his influence over the group.

I know... I find kind of curious how people in Europe have such a good image of his personality. I mean here people seems him as a lazy mercenary and a bad apple for the group, in Europe I think they perceive him as a harmless joker.

As someone who does not speak English as a first language I get a little offended by the term "broken English". But as someone who has to attend lectures where most of the teachers in my country speak with their bad English, I can understand your frustration.

I can understand this. I'm on the same boat. Sometimes I wish that there were a version of the articles with just bullets point. But others times when I have tons of papers to read I can loose myself from the "find reference machine mode" when the author speak with such a interesting way that I decided to give him a more caution looking, because I can see the passion, and sometimes that's when I found myself deep thinking on the context of my research. That's a subjective thing and maybe you guys are right, science should not be the place for this.

How to Write Like a Scientist by celacantoin TrueReddit

[–]celacanto[S] 0 points1 point ago*

I agree that this is the reason and the author of the article don't mentions it any time. But would not be possible to demonstrate some critical distance and be able to show the passion in research that was done (and not the for the result)? I feel old articles had more of that. For example, the classic work on DNA [PDF], Watson and Crick wrote (my emphasis):

We wish to put forward a radically different structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid.

(...)

It is probably impossible to build this structure with a ribose sugar in place of the deoxyribose, the the extra oxygen atom would make too close the van der Waals contact.

For me, these terms can show their bias, but it says nothing about the outcome itself. Today "radically different" would be replaced by "a different model of the previously proposed". "Probably impossible" would be like "This structure would have physicochemical properties that would have prevented the proposed structure itself"

I guess my point is* that people have biases and the fact that we change the language only make it disguised. Of course they should be avoid, but change the language may not be the ideal way.

I know that this is a joke, but I fell that this comic shows how a neutral language can be used to disguised the true.

*Is the first time I think about it, so my thoughts are a bit raw.

None of us are satisfied with the situation. But I think its important to understand that a person may feel somewhat uncomfortable with the photo of her daughter sleeping appearing on the Internet. For most respectful that this community is, for many people the Internet is still something strange and full of criminals. I do not think that is correct we enter into this discussion, which belongs only to + and her mother.
