I think there's less fear of what others are going to think about what you write. John Fowles has two versions of The Magus for example - a clean version and a dirtier version with more sex scenes. I've heard he published the dirtier version only after his parents died because he couldn't stand the idea of them reading something like that and being ashamed of him.

I have no problem with world-building if it's done for the purpose of creating a believable environment for your characters. Take sci-fi for example - I thought stories like Blade Runner, Robocop and Children of Men were fantastic because I really believed the characters and I really believed the world they were in, and most importantly, the world was IMPORTANT to the story.

When the world you've built is just built for its own sake - just to make for a cool environment for the characters to operate in - then I'm immensely turned off. The world has to be relevant to the story, and in turn, the details of the world you include must be relevant. If it's not relevant, leave it out.

Statistics can tell you a lot, but what they don't show is how concentrated the crime is in some areas. Have you been to Brazil? Have you walked the streets of Sao Paulo and Rio? In many areas it's just as nice as some parts of Canada and the U.S. and just as sketchy as other parts.

I'm not deluded here - I'm fully aware of the high crime and murder rates of Brazil as a whole. But to outright label an entire country as one of the most violent in the world is a gross and unfair generalization of a country that does struggle with social problems while doing just fine in many other areas.

I've been to Brazil three times. It's not violent. I know it's rough, and yes, it has a crime rate, but those are very concentrated in some areas which drives up the overall rate.

But Brazil one of the most violent societies in the world? Puh-leeze.

Even hunters themselves think that's a pretty downright cowardly thing to do. If you're going to hunt bears, go fucking hunt them like a man.

He lives in BC, where it IS illegal. It's also illegal in 18 American states. It's very true that he didn't break any laws, but he did cross a border to ensure that he didn't break any laws. That's another ballgame right there.
