Opening ports on Win7? by Shatteringbluein techsupport

[–]c0nv1ct 0 points1 point ago

Without a firewall or router in the way, the only way to open a port is to have something listening on it. Is it show it is open if you check it locally? You may need to verify your service is actually listening on that port.

Have you checked the health of your drives? Slow read speeds could be a sign of read failures meaning your drive is in the process of failing completely.

That actually looks pretty good. Another one for the amazon wishlist, thanks.

What is the second from the bottom on the right? It looks like a survival knife with the screw cap end. I've been looking for a decent one but all I've seen around where I live are of questionable quality, and I'm not even that picky.

I've been promised that blue mini griptillian for fixing my mom's computer tomorrow. If I can recover her photos I could score a delica and a lansky sharpening system as well. This could be an awesome weekend for my collection!

Why does installing Wine on Ubuntu 64-bit pull in 457MB of 32-bit libs? by daengboin Ubuntu

[–]c0nv1ct 2 points3 points ago

No, and I don't see why it should. You use 32bit libraries with 32bit binaries and 64bit libraries with 64bit binaries. Read up on "multilib linux" to see how this works. Even 64bit Windows uses a compatibility layer of its own to handle 32bit called WoW64. If you install Wine64 and want to run 32bit Windows binaries you will need to build the 32bit tree and any dependencies must have their 32bit versions installed as well.

64bit Wine is to support 64bit Windows software. You will want the 32bit Wine for the majority of stuff. I don't think 64bit Wine is being used much right now by anyone other than developers.

My little Norwegian knife collection by c0nv1ctin knives

I think you are right. For some reason the pics I've found make it look a little wider and a bit shorter. Mine has a very thick and narrow blade. With that handle it almost has a "prison shank" feel to it.

This is the Falken.

Those 3 at the bottom are pretty good but have a more utility knife feel to them. They are a bit heavy-handled in regards to balance. I actually didn't realize I had 3 until I gathered them all for this pic. I'm going to leave one out to use around the yard.

The Puukko is my favorite, but since my last name is Finnish I might be biased (I am of both Finnish and Norwegian descent.) It has a thick flat-ground blade and the handle is nice looking and very comfortable and well balanced. The Second would probably the Brusletto Hunter. It is flat ground as well (Brusletto's site says convex-grind but it looks flat to me) but has a much thinner blade which makes it surprisingly light. Third is the Falken. By far the best feeling handle with a nice thick hollow-ground blade. Probably the most practical of my 3, but I am partial to the bigger blades.

Yep, the Puukko says "Iisakki Järvenpää Oy" on the blade. I'm not sure which is the Troll, I will have to look at the catalog.

The far left is actually a Finnish Puukko. The only Helle is the well abused one on the bottom right, the rest are Brusletto. I was dumb enough to bring my other Helle knives to college with me where they ended up being stolen.

Just because a larger amount of people currently in one religion thought for themselves a little bit more and became more moderate doesn't mean the religion as a whole is any better than the other with less moderates. The moderates in either religion justify the radicals simply because they give them credibility by sourcing their belief on the same irrational system. You may find that Sam Harris agrees with me on this subject in "Letter to A Christian Nation: AFTERWORD".

If an atheist killed a bunch of people, could I smear the people on this board with that fact?

I wasn't aware atheists blindly followed a book filled with atrocities done in the name of an infallible supreme being. It would be pretty hard to use a simple disbelief in god to justify something in the same way people use religion to justify their atrocities. There just isn't an irrational foundation to justify an irrational action in atheism.

At my school quite a few people like this were unfortunately allowed to graduate. I fear it was to preserve their graduation rate. We even had one guy who somehow made it half way through his AA degree without learning how to type. When he ended up in a Linux class the teacher would not slow down enough for him to keep up while typing console commands. The guy ended up having two heart attacks, one during each of his attempts at the Linux course.

Additionally, the 9.11 attackers claimed in their own words that they were attacking in the name of religion. Breivik wasn't.

In his manifesto he claims he did it to preserve european christendom. It is pretty clear that his motives were based on religious/political/ideological reasons.

But the main reason this is wrong is because if you asked the average Christian about this terrorist attack they would nearly universally hate it. However, muslim opinion polls after the 9.11 attacks showed broad support across the Middle East.

The quantity of radicalism within a religion does not make a difference. The amount of people supporting an act of religiously motivated terrorism doesn't change the fact that it was motivated by religious views. I'm not saying it was purely religious either. It is a result of ultra right wing politics that incorporate religion in their core ideology and then prey on xenophobes like Breivik who are suckers for their demagogy. If you fill the mind of a well motivated crazy person with enough of this kind of demagogy tragedies like this can easily happen.

How much should I charge? by Sacredpotatoin techsupport

[–]c0nv1ct 0 points1 point ago

It depends on what exactly you are doing and how much time it takes. Are you doing this on-site? This would cost extra. Does the computer boot to a livecd or do you have to pull the hdd and use something like a sata-to-usb device to do the recovery? How much data are you recovering?

As a self-employed tech I charge $100 minimum to do anything on-site. If it is a quick job then that is usually all I will charge, but anything more will be at least another $40 an hour on top of the initial $100. I'm actually pretty cheap, most of my competition charges $50-60 an hour.
