ELI5: Why do we change the name of countries in the English language? ie: Deustchland - Germany; Nihon/Nippon - Japan; Espana - Spain by bfelixin explainlikeimfive

[–]btweet 4 points5 points ago

Also, "Mei guo" is just a shortened form of the name. The official name in Chinese for the United States of America is 美利坚合众国, with the first three characters pronounced "Mei Li Jian" in Mandarin or "Mei Lei Keen" in Cantonese, an approximation of "American" (or really 'Merican).

Gaybro athletes, what sport(s) do you play? by [deleted]in gaybros

Volleyball all through middle school and high school, but I was never very good at it. Looking to try crew, rugby or (lol) ultimate frisbee in college. Any suggestions/recommendations, bromos?

My desired schedule for my senior year will be busy- Which classes shouldn't I take? by katffroin highschool

[–]btweet 0 points1 point ago

drop English Language if you can; I feel like AP Lit is more intense, and most colleges accept either one for advanced credit (but usually not both). You're going to want a free period for senior year!

A free VPN to bypass China's Great Firewall? by btweetin techsupport

[–]btweet[S] 0 points1 point ago

Took me about two hours, but this is up and running!

I used Amazon's EC2 to set up an instance of Ubuntu and then used OpenVPN. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube -- everything's working!

Thanks for the suggestion :)

Kulula Airlines (x post from r/funny) by carz005in aviation

I've flown with them before. Great, fun airline. I think in the safety card they refer to the life jacket as a "fashionable retro inflatable jacket" or something.

I scored 2340 on the SAT, 800 on SAT IIs, AMA, what can I do to help you all? by wfrictionin teenagers

[–]btweet 0 points1 point ago

I took the PSAT as a Junior and got a 203-ish... When I took the actual SAT I ended up with a 2340. I would say the PSAT is a very rough estimate of how you'll do on the SAT. It's more useful for seeing your weaknesses than for predicting your actual score.

Does your school randomly drug test students? by ur2fat4uin highschool

[–]btweet 0 points1 point ago*

We have "random" drug testing at my school in Hong Kong. The belief among most students seems to be that it's not entirely random. I'm a senior, and we've had random testing since middle school but I've still never been tested. I feel like I'm missing out on something, lol
