Bicyclists and buses: A discussion by fizzlebottomin Seattle

[–]brian36000 3 points4 points ago

Would RCW 46.61.427 apply?

On a two-lane highway where passing is unsafe because of traffic in the opposite direction or other conditions, a slow moving vehicle, behind which five or more vehicles are formed in a line, shall turn off the roadway wherever sufficient area for a safe turn-out exists, in order to permit the vehicles following to proceed. As used in this section a slow moving vehicle is one which is proceeding at a rate of speed less than the normal flow of traffic at the particular time and place.

Why doesn't 911 accept texts? Certainly this would help thousands of people in emergency situations who for various reasons are not in the position to communicate their distress vocally. by GreatLookingGuyin AskReddit

Listening to the police scanner in my area, a huge number of calls are 911 hangups and they send police to the location.

How is it ok for Stubhub to use bots to bog down a tickets sites servers and buy all the tickets then turn around and sell them for double the initial cost? by sacunn215in AskReddit

[–]brian36000 20 points21 points ago

Some clarification. You basically get a maximum of $3.00 off per transaction, but the total "value" of your individual settlement could be up to $1.50 * 17 = $25.50.

From the settlement:

For each transaction that you made during the Class Period, you will receive one code via email for a $1.50 discount, up to a maximum of 17 codes... The Codes may be combined up to a maximum of two credits ($3.00) that may be applied on future transactions as described above. The Codes are non-transferable, expire 48 months from distribution...

Android Lost will e-mail you if it detects a different SIM card with the new phone number. So you still have SMS control over your phone.

Netflix's new segue from one TV episode to the next gets an A+ in my book. by FrankReynoldsin cordcutters

[–]brian36000 0 points1 point ago

The PS3 used to do this before one of the updates last year. It was pointless because after about 2.5 episodes, it'd pause playback at some random point and ask if you're still watching. Also, there was no way to disable it, so it was impossible to see the end credits before the next show started.

This is called a yellow trap. I'm also curious in to hearing what, if any, the traffic engineer's role in creating these yellow trap conditions I see frequently in some cities (e.g., Lakewood, WA). Did they just "forget" to account for it?

IAMA Traffic Engineer, AMA by alwaysreadyin IAmA

[–]brian36000 0 points1 point ago

In WA, if you're turning onto a 1-way street, you can turn on red whether it's a ball or a red arrow. Note that most states actually prohibit this if you're on a two-way street. Source:

Vehicle operators facing a steady red arrow indication may not enter the intersection control area to make the movement indicated by such arrow... ... However, the vehicle operators facing a steady red arrow indication may, after stopping proceed to make a ... left turn from a one-way street or two-way street into a one-way street carrying traffic in the direction of the left turn; unless a sign posted by competent authority prohibits such movement.

Around here, some traffic lights cause a "yellow trap" for left-turning vehicles when they receive the emergency signal. Why isn't this accounted for? What other factors in the light are typically adjusted during emergency conditions... e.g., are yellow times shorter, etc, to give the emergency vehicle a green quicker?

Additionally, you should contact the Wal-Mart corporate customer service to see how they respond: 1-800-WAL-MART. They'll probably send their district managers to inspect the store as a whole. As someone who used to work at a Wal-Mart (electronics dept), I will say that the store managers are typically scared of the district and corporate inspections.

Older redditors, how long have you been on the internet and how did you first get on? by artlutheriein AskReddit

[–]brian36000 0 points1 point ago

I was 12 years old in 1995. Long distance Dial-up connection with a terminal emulator on a Macintosh LC-II at my elementary school that connected us to one of the schools on wednet.edu. All text based, but had friendly menus. It provided e-mail, gopher, file downloads, text-based web access, and a shell. Come to think of it, I was only 12 and had my own e-mail address provided by the school... isn't that illegal now? :)

Seattle drivers! by geeeeoffffin Seattle

[–]brian36000 -1 points0 points ago

I doubt this happened in your case, but in some areas of the county there are traffic lights that will not give a green to the oncoming side until it senses traffic. I've seen this in Tukwila where the car didn't stop on the sensor, confusing everybody turning left.

The newer the game, the higher the points go... it was like a competition between the manufacturers back in the 90's to advertise "higher scores"!

Yep :) I get the reverse awkward pride on my own game. I own a Funhouse machine that I take every year to the Seattle pinball show. Normally my replay value is around 8,000,000, but after the weekend at the show, it drops to about 3,500,000.

I'd suggest places like craigslist, rec.games.pinball, and the Mr. Pinball Classifieds list. I own two machines, and bought both of them off craigslist.

Lots of bars with pinball machines host pinball tournaments, which can be entertaining for spectators, too.

I've wondered if a small business could just simply buy the machine outright to avoid the vendors and set it to free play, like your pool tables. I'd think it's feasible if you have the knowledge and time to do maintenance and repairs on the game yourself.

On many machines, by default, the replay score value is set to adjust up and down based on the recent percentage of people who achieve it.
