Linux programming in C. by NotAHumanBeingin linux4noobs

[–]binary 0 points1 point ago

Have you read The C Programming Language (K&R)? If not, start with that, even if you already have a grasp of C. Pay special attention to the last chapter, but the examples are great because you're writing basic utilities that have special importance to UNIX.

Then pick up C Programming: A Modern Approach. And maybe Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment after that.

Your post is incredibly vague, I just want you to know.

Ubuntu Server is pretty bland. How can I spice it up? by KE7CKIin linux4noobs

[–]binary 2 points3 points ago

K Mandla did a writeup about his fbterm setup which plays nicely with fbv.

Although Ubuntu most likely does it for you, KMS is a good thing to enable if you have a high resolution monitor but really really big fonts.

I'm guessing that you are running Server as a substitute for the Desktop edition, perhaps for the learning experience you mentioned? If so, I'm going to do my obligatory Arch whine, where I'll tell you that learning how to install and setup a bare bones distro will teach you a lot about Linux.

If you're running a server that's important, safety takes precedence over spice, and you should always have a very very good idea on what you're doing as it relates to resource management and security of the system.

I agree that such things should be regulated, but I'm wondering what makes the 2C family different, where it is valuable for research purposes as opposed to drugs like LSD that are essentially (as far as I know, at least) banned from most research facilities?

My favorite place was Shisha Nights, which was the old Sweet Shop turned into the present Sweet Shop. Good atmosphere, rarely crowded with some cool events.

As far as I know, most other places are pretty poor in comparison.

I'm broke as fuck and was wondering if anyone would lend me "Basic Engineering Circuit Analysis" 10th ed. for my summer class. A thank you pizza would be involved. by escapist11in ECE

[–]binary 0 points1 point ago

The book isn't that bad. Circuit analysis is a very very hard subject and the text book approaches the subject maturely. It will explain a topic once, maybe review it in different chapters (since many curriculums skip around the book), but that's it. Read each chapter at least twice, do all the exercises you can, and then use your teacher's lectures/office hours to fill in the gaps.

A lot of EEs tend to fall into the "so smart they don't need to work hard" category of students, and--at least for me--circuit analysis may be the first class that is actually a challenge and requires a lot of study time. From the way those reviews are written, I get the feeling that some students didn't get the grade they felt they should've and decided to blame the textbook instead.

I mean, it's dense but it's a textbook. It's not a light read.

Laptop help - Freshman EE by GodoRSin EngineeringStudents

[–]binary -2 points-1 points ago

I agree but he said he wanted to game and run EE software--both of which a netbook would be ill equipped to do. Also you really didn't even give suggestions on possible netbooks or desktop configurations, so you're giving him more work to do something that wasn't even in his original expectations.

Studying in groups // by yourself by Valakasin EngineeringStudents

[–]binary 1 point2 points ago

Hey, I went to a university eight hours away with no friends to keep me company. I know it seems hopeless to make friends, because everyone already has friends, but no one looks at someone and goes "well he's not even worth the time to talk to because I already have four other people to talk to."

So here's a few ideas for meeting people, engineering edition:

  • Go to class early and don't sulk in your seat when you do. People are talking--maybe they're talking about the homework, or something trivial. But this is a great time to approach people. Coursework is a common bond: ask a question about a particular problem, or just ask them how they did on the last test, etc etc.

  • I've noticed more class Facebook groups springing up. Search around to see if there is something like that for your class, or perhaps just a general purpose group for engineers at your school. This is a great way to form study groups, and also a good place to get help if the group is reasonably active.

  • Find any even remotely relevant groups that relate to your major (best for potential study mates, but you might also want to look into general interest groups to meet new people). These are meant--though maybe not explicitly--to serve as networking for students and typically you'll only find motivated students that bother to attend.

Scoring poorly on an exam: why does it affect some people's psyche worse than others? by Iomenain EngineeringStudents

[–]binary 0 points1 point ago

Some people view their grade not as a measure of their understanding but as a measure of merely being able to manipulate a system to benefit them. While it is true that your grade should closely match what you know of the material (though, that isn't always so), some might be inclined to disagree, supposing that they know the material and thus scraping by will not affect anything but the immediate present.

Making the grade has very concrete effects, not the least of which allowing you to move on in your studies. Retaking classes cost more money, sometimes compounded by the university; sometimes it will delay your graduation, delay an easy summer with friends, etc. So being able to tell yourself that it doesn't matter, focusing on the grade for an immediate benefit rather than the material for the long-term benefit, is very easy to slip into.

Not everyone, of course, is lying to themselves when they barely scrape by but maintain that they know the material. Exams are meant to be hard. Some people know how to better manage disappointment. When getting my scores back on an exam, I know exactly how much I have tried to know the material, and will know that my score will not only reflect that but will not be changed. So there's no point in worrying about your grade after the fact, unless you just want to have anxiety problems.

[–]binary 3 points4 points ago

As a double EE/CE major myself, you shouldn't act as if the double major is as impressive as a double major in two radically different (or even marginally different) fields. The double major basically necessitates 5-6 extra courses for most schools--namely, the CS courses that you wouldn't take as an EE.
