Get out the throw-aways: dear parents of disabled children, do you regret having your child(ren) or are you happier with them in your life? by justquitecuriousin AskReddit

[–]benkbenkbenk 3 points4 points ago

There was a fantastic Louis Theroux documentary on this very subject last week on BBC 2. You can view it online here, if you are in the UK. It was very moving, and showed both the ups and downs of parenting a child with autism.

Louis Theroux - Extreme Love DURATION: 1 HOUR Louis visits one of the best schools in America for autism. He meets the students and their families to get a glimpse of what life is like for them and to experience the pleasures and the strains of one of the most extraordinary kinds of relationship.

What is the most obscure fact that you've memorized? by darushman86in AskReddit

[–]benkbenkbenk 0 points1 point ago

I memorized the square root of 2 to 9 decimal places: 1.414213562. I was so bored at the end of a maths exam that I decided to calculate it with my calulator using iterative trial and error. The process of entering the numbers over and over to find a the next digit in the sequence embedded the number in my brain forever.

Reddit, are you or someone you are close to struggling deeply with living in a capitalist society? by mjranrin self

[–]benkbenkbenk 1 point2 points ago

In too work in a technology industry (Audio Visual) it pains me to see companies ripping out perfectly good and working systems, just to install the latest technology (going HD or widescreen etc) which probably wont vastly improve their productivity (despite the fact this keeps me in a job!). Similarly I too repair my friends consumer electronics, iPhones, Laptops, TVs etc, but I am still working with a very outdated laptop and phone, because although I see the technology as useful, I don't desire it in the way that many do. I like your sentence "I hate to see things go to waste without knowledge". I have friends who are way too quick to chuck things out that appear on the surface to be broken, when an easy fix can eek much more life out of them.

My friend sent me a picture of a new watch... ಠ_ಠ by pantea01in WTF

[–]benkbenkbenk 0 points1 point ago

My friend and I were once talking on Facebook, she said, "right I am off for a bath now" I replied saying, "bye, be sure to send us a picture!"

To continue the joke she took a photo of her feet in the bath, not realising that her full frontal reflection was visible in the chrome overflow cover!

Needless to say we found this hilarous and the photo/story went round all our friends, she was not amused!

ELI5: why computer viruses exist, who profits from them, and how. by zapperdude60in explainlikeimfive

[–]benkbenkbenk 1 point2 points ago

The Stuxnet talk is really interesting, what I don't understand though is how he turns it around at the end... at first he says the code is a directed attack on a specific type of controller, and that is how they track down the target as the Iranian centrifuges, but at the end he is saying is a WMD that could potentially attack targets in the West. How does he get to this conclusion?

Does anyone else thing that "Racists" should be people who enjoy challenging one another to car and foot races? by Delfishiein DAE

[–]benkbenkbenk 2 points3 points ago

Me and my mate Easty once spent a good 24hrs (with the help of narcotics) playing Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. We started out buying a second hand car, i can't remember the make now, but it came in white. After this, we decided for some reason (probably due to the drugs) only to buy cars in white. Taking each race in turn we got pretty far in the game and every time we had the chance of buying a car we got it in white. We decided that our team would be called White Power and that we were a team of racisits. Our tagline would be Racists - the Art of Racing. Now I must qualify here, that we are not racists in the more widely accepted understanding of the term, and the whole episode was done with tongue in cheek drug induced irony, but yet I agree, a racist should be someone who likes to race.

What have been the biggest changes in house music over the last ten years? by benkbenkbenkin House

I would also add the influence of world music and rap with acts such as Buraka Som Sistema.

What have been the biggest changes in house music over the last ten years? by benkbenkbenkin House

[–]benkbenkbenk[S] 0 points1 point ago*

I would have to agree with Satisfaction yep, introduced more of the electro house sound which i think has become dominant over the last 10 years

Edit: would anyone agree that Mr. Oizo's Flatbeat could be said to be the original electro house track?

If i am in a pitch black room, why do i need to close my eyes to sleep? by stantonbarbasin askscience

[–]benkbenkbenk 26 points27 points ago

As well as keeping out light, your eyelids serve as a protective barrier, and stop foreign objects entering the eye during sleep, they also help keep the eyes lubricated stopping them from drying out.

DAE feel Apple artificially constricts supplies of their gadgets to fetch the "Sold Out" tag on news headlines? by Frooglerin DAE

[–]benkbenkbenk 1 point2 points ago

I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me, Ferrari have long used a similar technique, producing one less car than they think they can sell. In Ferrari's case it keeps a sense of exclusivity and high demand. In Apple's case it keeps them in the headlines, and gives the sense of high demand and desirability.

What projects have you worked on? In school, at work, at home, or anywhere? by wenausin AskEngineers

[–]benkbenkbenk 0 points1 point ago

At Uni I wrote a piece of software that performed microphone modelling, using recorded impulse responses, which were then applied to a sound through fast convolution.

Since graduating I have designed an outdoor speaker system that was concealed in a stone planter.

I have designed and built a motion sensitive, solar powered device for capturing photos of wildlife.

I have restored a MK2 Golf GTI, including rebuilding it's entire braking system.

I used to program home automation control systems in multi-million pound houses.

I now design audio/visual and video conferencing systems used in the one of the worlds largest banks.

Hopefully next winter I will be going to Antarctica to help restore and maintain an ex scientific base now used as a living museum.

As someone else has said, an engineering degree is what you make of it, mine was actually in audio engineering, I just happen to be fairly practical and picked up a number of things on the way!
