I don't often have to defend my leftism... but it's likely because I choose to surround myself with people who are like me. As for atheism, I find that most people I talk with are either atheist, or agnostic, or at least reject traditional religion in favour of some kind of spirituality.

I DO come across a lot of people who are anti-choice and homophobic, but they all lack legitimate reasons. It's always, "... Well, the BIBLE says..." - none of them can formulate their own reasons, they simply defer to what they perceive to be a more powerful moral authority. To which I reply, "Are you fucking retarded?"

And it's true - the average Windsorite is sorely misinformed or disinterested in politics, choosing to watch Fox News instead of the CBC. Or Desperate Housewives... idk. I don't think that there are a lot of religious people per se - very few people I know actually attend a church - but there are many, many conservatives. They often claim some sort of religious reason for their conservatism, as if it excuses them from the conversation or places them at some higher level above others. Ignorance breeds conservatism, it seems.

Driving home at 3am with parents, stopped at a red light in a small town. I was laying on the beach (Siesta Key, FL), watching a couple of spring breakers toss a football back and forth, when one of them decided to dump a back of chips to attract the seagulls. THEN, they started targeting the birds with their football, laughing. I gave them the nastiest bout of public humiliation they've heard in a long time.... but they sat right down after that.

I was born in Canada, but on the border bn Canada and the states - I can literally hear people playing guitar on Belle Isle,USA, from my balcony. It's like this weird East/West Germany thing... with a river down the middle instead of concrete. Probably does a better job at keeping the bullets on their side though :P

No, um, I love it here. The free health care is awesome, we don't care if you smoke pot in public, and crime is way, way low (esp violent crime - some guy in the city robbed a corner store at gunpoint, and it made the news on the west coast). Plus we have a stable, well-structured economy, jobs, little religion, little if any extremism, and we're pretty nice, to boot :D

I'm moving to Calgary by the end of the summer - more jobs than people to fill them, small-town feel with big-city amenities. And I love puppies and soccer, so high-five :D

Downside: I'm sXe, but you can get as high as you want, doesn't bother me in the slightest!

I've probably done it 5-6 times in as many months...my dad is a fireman, so I got traffic-accident-horror-stories at bedtime (brains washed off sidewalks, autopsies, seatbelt-less accident victims pouring out of their cars like 'unset jello').

In a completely unrelated note, I don't drink alcohol or eat jello.

I borrowed the car for the evening, and blew curfew coming home because I spotted a blatantly drunk driver, called the cops, and followed him until the police located him.

I was chewed the fuck out at home and told that it was "none of my business" and to "let someone else" call the police.

Death does weird stuff... like make us wonder if there's anything beyond the grave.

When someone passes, I consider how they lived their life. Did they help others? Did they always try their best to improve someone else's life, even in the smallest way? To me, that's the sign of a good person. It's what you do HERE, now, on earth, that matters. You have the power to do immense things, simply by smiling at one person... Even if there were an afterlife, it would be a selfish existence, IMHO.

Look at how your friend lived his life, and strive to emulate the best aspects of it. You'll be remembered not as some wispy ghost, but as a good, kind person who inspired others to be like them. That's the best kind of legacy :)

In high school, I was shoved, spat on, tripped, teased, and otherwise ostracized by the in-crowd, especially by the jocks.

Fast-forward 6 years. I was modelling in a lingerie show hosted at an upscale nightclub. The former captain of the basketball team, after acting like a drooling, drunk, horny frat boy during the show, approached me afterwards and started hitting on me, trying to get my number, offering me drinks, etc. I let him go on... and on... and finally asked him if he recognized me. He didn't. So I jogged his memory.

I told him who I was, and reminded me of how utterly cruel he had been, and how he had never once shown remorse for how he treated me and how he had allowed his peers to treat me. He started to stammer something as I walked away. But he didn't take a hint because 5 minutes later, he tried picking a fight with my fiance, and then he grabbed my ass - I had his thrown out of the club.
