If I were you, I'd drop the ball in a place close enough to the original lie. I only say this because poor course maintenance shouldn't be a factor when playing. Think about if you were at any other course, that grass would've been maintained too a degree where you aren't worrying about a random chunk of grass.

Hole #7 and tee box #8 on a local course I used to play all the time. It has a male Red-winged blackbird. Whenever we would get within 20-30 yards of its tree, it would dive bomb at our heads.

The first time we found out about it, I was taking a 40 yard shot from the fairway, and I feel this thing swoop by my head(felt like its wing clipped me) only to look up and see it coming right back at me. So one of us would basically have to distract the bird by swinging the club and chasing it away while the other shoots.

Fun fact on the Red-winged Blackbird - Males have been known to swoop humans who encroach upon their nesting territory during breeding season.
