Old private messages popping up… by grondinin modhelp

Had a bunch of messages popping up from RobotRollCall and for an instant I thought she was back.. :-( got a little heartbroken, those were great askscience days

Redditor cheats on pregnant wife by statutory raping 16 y.o. virgin and asks /r/relationships for help "minimizing" the damage when 16 y.o. threatens to tell his wife by thelostapostlein worstof

The thread isn't only piling. They're telling him how it is: that he should accept reality and not try to "fix" things that are beyond the point of fixing.

Sometimes saying "you fucked up and should man up and accept the consequences" is the best advice.

Is it ok for vegetarians to eat grass type pokemon? by Dappemin shittyadvice

Want a serious answer? Head out to /r/asksciencefiction - we've already had a great constructive debate on the possibility of veganism in the Harry potter universe, where plants can talk and a great discussion on the ecology of pokemons.

ELI5: Why did Zuckerberg go public with Facebook's stock and why are the shares tanking? by illymaysin explainlikeimfive

It backfired for the early traders. Facebook is smiling all the way to the bank that they got the best value for their papers.

Why can't the R2 robots (R2D2) pilot the X-Wings? by avsain AskScienceFiction

[–]avsa[S] 0 points1 point ago

As evidenced by anakin skywalker, it's quite possible to reprogram a human for it to change sides, it just takes more time.

TIL that Greenland is projected 14 times larger than it really is on a map by Derk444in todayilearned

[–]avsa 3 points4 points ago

Small curiosity: I made that migration map when I was in college and uploaded it to Wikipedia. Along with the oceans map its probably my most viewed work. It makes me smile whenever I find it on random places like a reddit thread. :-)

Without a comparison I am still unsure of how big that is. How big is that surgical instrument?

How can we differentiate acceleration from inclination? Or can we? by avsain askscience

[–]avsa[S] 0 points1 point ago

I see exactly what you mean. Which is why I started wondering because in theory sitting on a tilted chair should feel exactly like being accelerated forward in a planet with a slighly lower gravity, yet I can't imagine it being anything alike.

How can we differentiate acceleration from inclination? Or can we? by avsain askscience

[–]avsa[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's interesting. Then we somehow are so used to the total force of gravity that we can feel when the sum of the vectors is stronger than the usual. I still wonder how much of it can be faked thou. If you were put in those tilting simulators and the vehicle tilted upwards while screens around you gave an illusion of acceleration, I imagine most people would be fooled by it...

Introducing the Leap by FriarNurglein apple

[–]avsa 0 points1 point ago

It seems you could use it with your wrist resting, like a trackpad extension but with more gestures. Apple should buy this immediately, it works a lot better if it's part of the OS and developers build with it in mind.

Was that golf ball worth it? by fuzzyferretin WTF

[–]avsa 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. I was pretty shocked to see everyone pile up here to make fun of the guy mostly because he was fat and looks like someone who would be golfing.

Why can't the R2 robots (R2D2) pilot the X-Wings? by avsain AskScienceFiction

Wow! These answers are what this subreddit was created for!

Why can't the R2 robots (R2D2) pilot the X-Wings? by avsain AskScienceFiction

[–]avsa[S] 0 points1 point ago

I always thought the single issue with the droid army was simply that it needed a persistent connection to a central server for the droids to work - much like diablo 3 DRMs – and therefore once the central node got attacked the whole army shut down. R2 robots are self reliable and can work even in remote desert locations.

Debating birthers is frustrating by flettzin skeptic

[–]avsa 1 point2 points ago

I can be wrong but I really believe the Birther movement is very racist in its roots. In the end it seems to be a long discussion saying that Obama can't be a true American, because "he doesnt look like us, true Americans".

Interesting thread but a heads up: this isn't a subreddit for general science fiction talk, please read the sidebar.

Would that mean that something standing in the pole is slightly heavier than the same mass at the equator?

When a technology developed for space missions becomes market products, does the patents/royalties fund more space research? by avsain askscience

[–]avsa[S] 0 points1 point ago

Its understandable but also sad. I imagine if 0.01% of the money generated in all space related stuff went to fund more space stuff, we would be a lot better off..

If Earth just randomly split apart and all parts of Earth just scattered throughout space. But no humans died, how long would oxygen stay in place for us to live just floating? by PimpDaddyCoCoin askscience

[–]avsa 0 points1 point ago

According to wolfram alpha, a sphere with the radius of earth made of pure air in a uniform density would weight 1 380 000 000 billion tons. If you were floating at 6 thousand kilometers from the center (about the same distance you are now) then you would feel 1.092×10-28 newtons of gravity pulling you in. That's not much at all. The escape velocuty of such body would be 5.3km/s, which is smaller than the 465.1 m/s that someone at the equator might have. So you wouldn't be thrown into space, but some air might.

That's the numbers. Here's my basic physics understanding of what would probably happen..

It's important to remember that air compresses, so if enough air remained it wouln't be a nice cloud where anyone can float happily ever after.

So since you don't have enough escape velocity you would probably just fall to the center of the planet, along with everyone else AND the whole atmosphere. The full pressure of alr would build up and you'de be crushed long before you reached the center of earth. It's probable that the center of the planet would be so compressed that it would be solid, like the center of all gas planets.
