If you had to choose between Ableton and FL Studio as your first DAW to learn which would it be and why? by ent-likein edmproduction

OH MY GOD THE NEATNESS. It's actually PRODUCTIVE to be OCD with Ableton as your DAW.

All my different kind's of busses/groups have a different color according to their function/routing.

Right, but Live lets you set up infinite parallel chains within each track, without external (outside that one track) mixing and you can route the outputs of any audio effect rack to a track. It's like FL's incredible mixer but broken up and imbedded each individual track.

How do I create tasteful distortion? by ElectricPancakein edmproduction

Oh and one more use for Vinyl Distoriton!

If you're layering fat synths and they aren't quite gel-ing, just throw on the Vinyl Distortion and it can fold them all together.

Well my favorite things to do with it are:

1) For a synth that's boringly smooth, the bias knob will break things up nicely. 40%-50% sounds fairly "broken" anything over 60% sounds too gnarly IMO.

2) Cranking the drive and setting the tone to -40% really beefs up low mids, and high tone settings with a little bias (provided the sound you're affecting has enough low end) can add a screamy top end.

3) Rather than compressing things, sometimes I turn the drive all the way up, set the dry/wet to 80% and leave the tone. Then I play with the "A, B, C" controls for a thickened sound.

Also check out the vinyl distortion. It's a bitch to tune up, but if you play with the drive amount, and ignore the top "Pinch" section, you can really get a smooth, yet gritty buzz not unlike Big Muff Fuzz.

But most importantly, IMO, the Ableton distoriton plugins aren't great as single distortion units, but chaining them together (eg. Warm Tube->Vinyl->REALLY light Overdrive) can make some awesome sounding distortions.

(Final Note: The AMP effect's blues setting is AMAZING for adding shrieking top end to your synths, if you keep the dry/wet fairly low.)

Ableton's overdrive is really harsh, but it has its uses.

I'd look at Dynamic Tube again though, it can achieve a really gorgeous smooth warmth.

[How-To Request] Chord Synth from Phonat - "Set Me Free" by FM1977in edmproduction

[–]asphinctersayswhat 1 point2 points ago

Sounds like pure saw waves into a 12db lowpass (try the Lowpass 2 on massive) with an envelope on the cutoff. Put the attack and sustain at 0% and play with the decay until it sounds right (and maybe a touch of release on the Amp Envelope).

Beyond that, make sure that your chords are spread out over several octaves to get a fuller sound.

Ableton's Instrument Racks and Audio Effect Racks really unlock a lot of flexibility that is only available otherwise through fairly complex bussing/mixer functions.

Korg MS2000 or Komplete 8? by amanandamaskin edmproduction

Far from useless! The guitar effects are brilliant for really grungy, gritty, sharply twisted leads and basslines.

You sound like a Maschine kind of person! I envy your finger drumming ambition... I'm too much of a synth geek.

Best advice I can give, as far as Komplete is USE THE TRANSIENT SHAPER IN GUITAR RIG. It helps tighten up anything from drums to percussive stabs.

[–]asphinctersayswhat 2 points3 points ago

I would recommend going software for a new producer. Especially with a huge package like Komplete 8. I LOVE using Massive for really analog stuff, and FM8 is a monster (a little difficult to learn though. I mostly stick to Ableton's Operator). Absynth and the Reaktor ensembles that ship with it are really quirky and fun, and the effects (Guitar Rig and the like) are BRILLIANT.

Getting a hardware synth requires setting up an external instruments, fiddling with latency, and the like.

All said and done, go Komplete. It's an amazing package, especially if you're just starting.

(Final Note: Maschine is really not that great, IMO, unless you are a pad drummer/MPC kind of person. It's not as flexible or comprehensive as DAW's like Live and it can be tricky to run inside another DAW as a plugin/rewire device.)

hey propellerheads: what"s your method for building a spectrum analyzer in Reason? by Maksimilianin edmproduction

[–]asphinctersayswhat 0 points1 point ago

I build multiband effects, cool delay racks, and other "audio contraptions" with Ableton's simpler built in effects. There are plugins out there that would offer the same functionality, but I enjoy creating my own effect racks.

I feel like I get this in Ableton because I like the extra functionality of handmade racks.

I always bounce through tape to a separate audio track, so there IS an undo. For the drums on my remix of Consensual Rape the kicks sounded GREAT through the tape, but the snares were super muddy, so I just replaced all the kicks with taped kicks, and left the snares dry.

tl;dr You can use the output of the tape as a more flexible, chop-able second set of waveforms really well.
