I can't think of a clever title so here's a rabbit with a toilet paper tube on its head.

Admittedly I don't know anything about rabbits or toilet paper tubes, but that animal looks like it should be king of something.

Edit: typo

Reddit, what word do you hate hearing?

anomoly 4 points5 points 2 days ago[-]

irregardless

I know the post is about a word, but I'd also like to throw in the phrase "I could care less".

TIL: He studied architecture at Berkeley, theatre at UCLA, and Shakespeare in England. He's fluent in three languages and helped to plan the LA subway system. During WWII, he was interned in a concentration camp. Guess who....

anomoly 4 points5 points 2 days ago[-]

While I agree that he's a badass beyond anything I'll ever come close to achieving; I think my "badass that badasses dream about" vote still has to go to James Doohan.

I will add the caveat that I was in the military so I may be a bit biased in this regard.

For those that "deconverted"

anomoly 1 point2 points 3 days ago[-]

I was raised in a pentecostal home and was involved in all aspects of the church. Youth group leadership, worship teams, bible camps; you name it, I was part of it. That being said, three things lead to the beginning of my "deconversion":

The first was realizing that many of the leaders in the church (deacons, pastors, etc) were extremely hypocritical. I was friends with their children and would see how different they acted in the privacy of their homes then when they were in the church.

The second step, ironically, started when I began going on missions trips. If you're not familiar with the concept, a missions trip is when a group of religious folks travel somewhere with the intent of converting the local inhabitants to belief system of said religion. I didn't mind the "good work" done on the trips. Things like repairing schools, giving out food to starving people, and helping the local community in whatever ways were needed. We would do this during the day and, all the while, invite the people we were helping to an evening service at the local church. During these services one or two of us "missionaries" would give our "testimony" of how we were saved and what God had done for us in our lives. Over the course of three of these trips I realized that I couldn't come up with a convincing argument for why the people I was talking to should believe in the God that I believed in. That lead to the question, "If I can't convince others to believe in this God, why do I believe in him?"

From there on out it was a gradual decline of belief. The final nail in the coffin of religion for me was when I was deployed to Iraq. I saw friends get injured even though churches back home were praying for them, and saw people die even though their religion convinced them that killing me was the right thing to do.

A few years after coming home from the deployment a friend pointed me to the works of Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, etc. The comfort I found in the science and logic exceeded what I had ever felt with religion.

tl;dr: Hypocrisy, critical thinking and war lead to my "deconversion".

I want an mp3-player, but I hate the iPod. What do you guys use?

anomoly 0 points1 point 3 days ago[-]

I use an iPod, but I have the RockBox firmware running on it instead of the default.

If you listen to podcasts I use gPodder as my podcast client and the two work great together.

Neil Degrasse Tyson on the argument from ignorance and UFO's, but much applies to religious experiences as well.

Here is the link to full presentation. I'm watching it now and it's definitely worth the hour and a half.

Edit: If you don't watch the full video at least do yourself a favor and watch the last 14 minutes. Absolutely mind blowing.

Who is this gorgeous young woman? (SFW)

anomoly 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

This video was huge on the European MTV station we got when I was in Iraq.

Due to the fact that I was part of an all male infantry platoon, this was generally two and half minutes of silent drooling followed by a room full of guys saying some variation of, "I'll be in my bunk".

HUGE MANATEE!

I laughed far more than I expected at this, along with reading it out loud multiple times with Herbert Morrison's inflection.

What IM do you use? Why cant we all just use ONE? Digsby self promotes, Pidgen lacks progam specific features, AIM is lame

anomoly 0 points1 point 2 months ago[-]

I rarely use any of the IM programs these days. For the few occasions that I do I set up an account on Meebo.com. I can log in and have all my accounts available from any browser.

You can also log into individual IM accounts from the main page without setting up a Meebo account.

And all of a sudden... I want children... [PIC]

anomoly 1 point2 points 2 months ago[-]

I fail to see why children are a prerequisite to owning the pictured items. It seems many of the items are even available in up to queen size, that should be plenty for most of Reddit.

I didn't realise how helpless people are in a tsunami until I watched this

It's almost like the earth is all, "Oh, you humans think you're so powerful. Well, we'll see, check this shit out."

Hey /r/pipetobacco, I came across my pipes from a few years ago and I thought I'd share them.

anomoly [S] 0 points1 point 2 months ago[-]

Well, not all Petersons, the bottom one is a Savinelli. But my favorite of the group is a Peterson. :)

Thanks :)

The bent bulldog (second from the bottom) is also green, but it's my favorite of the bunch and using it has faded the color a bit. They're both Peterson pipes if you ever wanted to look into getting one.

Scientists restore sight to legally blind; we'll take over the miracles from here on out.

anomoly 0 points1 point 2 months ago[-]

First off, I completely agree with the spirit of the title. But this stuff is so cool that I almost don't even want to bother thinking about the religious nuts that will try to bend this to benefit their beliefs.

Seriously, curing blindness. Science is fucking awesome. And not the new awesome, the original meaning.

World's first face transplant recipient goes public

Rafael, 34, was the third person in Spain and the tenth in the world to receive a partial face transplant.

Your title seems to be off by nine.

The best commercial I have ever seen in my life. It makes me want to buy a mobile home.

It pains me to say it, but this could easily be the next reality show available on the Discovery Channel.

Wow, this is great stuff. Here's another video of her that blew my mind.

Thanks much for the introduction.

What kind of assault rifle is this?

anomoly 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

Just for the sake of covering the details, the sight looks like an Aimpoint.
