Drunk-Texting Solution? by andersonenvyin cripplingalcoholism

[–]andersonenvy[S] 1 point2 points ago

I like this idea. Sometimes it's more about getting something off my chest than anything else. That could be the solution I'm looking for, will try.

Yeah, but I think the problem with both of those apps, is that you have to open them first. So they don't actually block the text application that comes with your phone.

Not a bad idea. I've tried similar, but changed the person's name entirely and then couldn't find them later...

Anxiety by Pelpyin cripplingalcoholism

[–]andersonenvy 0 points1 point ago

Get sober for yourself, not for a girlfriend? Just an idea. Focus on what you like about being sober. For anxiety: the only thing I know is keep busy. Busy as you can, and remember other people aren't looking at you as hard as you think. Take comfort in the fact no one cares about you so you can do whatever you need (no offense that's how I do it).

If it's any consolation, I know exactly how you feel. I read it twice. So, at least you're not alone.

Instead of opening another "visiting in NY" post I compiled Reddit's favorite places in this map. Could you help me expand it? by kickm3in nyc

[–]andersonenvy 1 point2 points ago

Might need some moderating. One just says "Alphabet City". I clicked one above it just said "East Village"... Kind of fruitless tagging.

I can only call people that I'm nervous to talk to after a few drinks, but not a good idea to call after too many drinks. It's hard to find that sweet spot.

TIL people rarely play "Monopoly" with the correct rules, leading to the longer and less exciting game by GryphonExtinctin todayilearned

[–]andersonenvy 0 points1 point ago

I don't see how the auction makes the game that much better. That's how the rules are, for example, on video game Monopoly, but only a fool would choose not to buy a property. THE way to win Monopoly is do anything you can to block other players from getting a set.

Fuck leaving the house to drink by Smecklesin cripplingalcoholism

[–]andersonenvy 1 point2 points ago

To each their own. But most 'tegulars' in bars are probably there for similar reasons. Try the bar again during happy hour, you might connect with people you wouldn't have otherwise. I do think it's important to not drink at home. In my experience it's best to get your demons out in a bar, and reserve "home" as a safe place - if you can. Up to you, just saying I've been there.

I went. Waste of time IMHO.

Hm, I disagree. If you become a regular at the bar, by sitting at the bar itself and socializing, it might be worth your money.

ELI5: Faith vs. Works by DeliverMein explainlikeimfive

[–]andersonenvy 2 points3 points ago

Yes, only some branches do. The one I grew up with did not believe in Purgaroty. So, simply put - it's like a boolean script: if (believe that Jesus is really God) { Go to Heaven } else { Go to Hell } <!-- end script -->

ELI5: Faith vs. Works by DeliverMein explainlikeimfive

[–]andersonenvy 3 points4 points ago

Going back to my memories from Evangelical Sunday School here for 5 year old's. The concept I recall comes from the verse Ephesians 2:8-9. Many protestant Christians believe that you can only go to Heaven through faith (IE "accepting" that Jesus died for your sins - simply believing it to be true). While maybe Catholics, for example, would think you need to do good deeds (confessions, donations, going to church etc). I think the concept gets questioned, when - say - a serial killer accepts Christ as his Savior. It's such a simple act, a thought or pledge really, but now the killer will go to Heaven, while a very good person who does not believe would go to Hell.

ELI5: Why 24p is preferred when 30p/48p/60p are technically better? by jaguarphdin explainlikeimfive

[–]andersonenvy 13 points14 points ago

It has mostly to do with motion blur.

When we watch movies, we're not really watching movement, but still images (frames) going by really fast on the screen. 24p means 24 frames per second. 30p means 30 frames per second.

Depending on the monitor or TV you're watching, 30p will often have a more "hyper real" look, where motion is almost too fluid. Also, panning shots can look "jittery." This is because you are seeing more frames per second.

Dramatic movies and films use 24p because (since there's less frames per second) our brain "blurs" the images together more smoothly, which usually creates a more pleasant effect with drama.

Why do cabs all change shifts at the same time? by andersonenvyin nyc

[–]andersonenvy[S] 1 point2 points ago

Ah, yeah that does makes sense. But since the night shift is slow, maybe they could add a third shift such as 8AM - 8PM, somehow rotating that good shift amongst drivers. A friend of mine said they've had the same shifts change since the 70's actually.
