What philosophical terms should be in every educated man's vocabulary? by amarcordin philosophy

[–]amarcord[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, I really like this one. Although it would be more important for people to understand the concept than the term itself.

What philosophical terms should be in every educated man's vocabulary? by amarcordin philosophy

[–]amarcord[S] 1 point2 points ago

It contains a stronger connotation of "total operative system through which an individual interprets the world", worldview I find is more easily confusable with just a generic set of beliefs. I personally don't use weltanschauung unless I intend to emphasise the stricter definition.

As it indeed was.

Thanks, this is exactly the type of word I was hoping to learn in this thread.

Where did the "gay accent" come from? by prose-before-hoesin AskSocialScience

[–]amarcord 15 points16 points ago

the notion that guys would "put on" that kind of stuff is frankly insulting to gay people.

And why would that be frankly insulting? "Wearing" an accent (consciously or not) is a frequent marker of group affiliation/identity. It is a valid (although not necessarily right) hypothesis.

Too Hot for TED: Income Inequality — TED’s organizers recently decided one idea was too controversial to spread: the notion that widening income inequality is a bad thing for America, and that as a result, the rich should pay more in taxes by CroydonCin politics

[–]amarcord 0 points1 point ago

If a speaker could make a good case with good, empirical data for why trickle-down economics works (good luck with that) I would be very interested on seeing it on TED. I also suspect that the censored speaker was going to present more than just ideological points, and that his conclusions were going to be backed by exhaustive or at least substantial empirical evidence.

IAmA former child bride. I was married to a 42 year old man when I was 7 while living in Saudi Arabia. I am now 25, living in the US, and single. AMA by [deleted]in IAmA

[–]amarcord 29 points30 points ago

By reading this AMA I'm not going to think that all muslims are bad or that the Koran directly and inevitably produces this type of behaviour when applied to the letter.

Nonetheless it is going to confirm that in the muslim world there are pockets of medieval-flavoured authoritarian insanity, and that in the "genotype" of Islam there exists the potential to express this "phenotype" with greater frequency than in other systems of thought or religion which are available today.

"All muslims are bad" and "Islam is not in any way connected to this" are not binary choices.

On Tiger Moms by Squant0in TrueReddit

[–]amarcord 2 points3 points ago

There's no way to say this that isn't condescending, but you're being incredibly naive. How is making six figures (let alone seven), after coming from a low/middle-class family, not a spectacular achievement? I'm not claiming that income is an effective measure of someone's achievements, but for you to dismiss $100,000 a year offhand as "nothing especially spectacular" frankly reflects on your age. Wait until you have to pay for college and then see how you feel about $100,000.

Most of your responses to OP are true but not particularly profound nor relevant. In the paragraph I quoted you fundamentally ignored the point that was made (that tiger mom parenting - when successful - produces predictable but limited levels of success, a type of "excellent mediocrity"), replied with something which is probably true but nonetheless unrelated (that economic success is important and remarkable) and acted as if you had just refuted OP's point.

Groups on G+? by amarcordin googleplus

[–]amarcord[S] 4 points5 points ago

If that is the case I think I don't understood how circles work. I suppose that if five friends all created the same circle (with the same five people inside it) and shared items to that circle the functions of Facebook groups would be almost completely replicated, but it would be a quite awkward fix. Also, there wouldn't be a specific page in which all the material that is of interest to that group would be posted.

Can Meritocracy ever be a viable governmental alternative to Democracy? by imnotanumber42in NeutralPolitics

[–]amarcord 5 points6 points ago

Every one person knows what is best for themselves better than anyone else.

That is one bold assumption. I know this is NP, but it seems very evident that the success of the Republican Party in America among those people who would be most damaged from its policies (in return for impalpable or fringe benefits - guns and Jesus) relies on the fact that people are most often identifying their own interests in objective terms and make rational decisions as to how they are best taken care of.

[Mar 28] Letter from Qing Dynasty to Queen Victoria, the last attempt to prevent the Opium Wars. by toronadoin RedditDayOf

[–]amarcord 0 points1 point ago

"We have heard that in your own country opium is prohibited with the utmost strictness and severity"

It is worth nothing that this statement is false, at that at the time in England opium was not a prohibited substance.

I don't understand people complaining about cat pictures and memes on their home page. I unsubscribe from all the subreddits that are meme-prone and now my homepage looks pretty clean.

Race Against the Machine: Will technology create permanently high unemployment? by greenrdin TrueReddit

[–]amarcord 1 point2 points ago

It would be to say the least ironic if in thirty years time most tasks related with high levels of cognition had been automated and mankind was left to "typing captchas", folding and pressing shirts or performing whatever other apparently trivial function which machines have not caught up with yet.

Race Against the Machine: Will technology create permanently high unemployment? by greenrdin TrueReddit

[–]amarcord 3 points4 points ago

You work in a peculiar field. If a high degree of automation came to the job of – say – scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets, automation could not possibly cause the market to express larger and more complex needs for scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets.
