You're going to need to quote a better source than that. The circumference of a 20 inch wheel with tire is about 63 inches, while the circumference or a 700c wheel with tire is about 90 inches. That's pretty much the 1:1.4 ratio mentioned above, so in order to move the same distance with the same drivetrain on both wheels you would have to pedal the smaller one 1.4 times. A larger chain ring makes up for this. Given that the chainring pictured is 82t and a usual size for chainrings is 53t, that gives us a ratio of 1:1.5, which would make a single rotation of the pedals on the smaller wheel move the bike just a little farther than a single rotation of the pedals on the big wheels.

[Build Help] What is the smallest size of case my build can fit in? by maticsin buildapc

[–]aldenhg 1 point2 points ago

I actually built a rig in one of these for a friend of mine. Great case to work in, but definitely go for the modular PSU. Cables can get overwhelming in small cases. That case has room for a huge side fan the could be very handy if you ever intend to stick a really powerful GPU in there.

EDIT: PSU, not GPU.

Bikers - please don't run over pedestrians on sidewalks. by ebmfreakin Portland

Yes, and I had to get the buck teeth and coke bottle glasses that sprouted on me surgically removed. They're fun and everything - just so dorky.

Around the banks of the river I'd be more worried about the guys (there are two that I've seen enough to recognize) who ride recumbent bikes without flags through crowds. One hit me a few years back, causing me to go over my handlebars and tried to blame me. After.. uh.. eloquently explaining to him why he was wrong, he just kind of stuttered and said he'd get a flag. I saw him last week and he still doesn't have one.

I say this with all the love and compassion one possibly can.

Segways are the dorkiest form of transportation, even over the unicycle.

About to build a 240,000 Joule supercapacitor bank. This is going to be fun... by Nick-SparkFunin science

Be careful! I watched a guy get hit pretty hard with a ~10kJ bank. He did not have a good time that week in the hospital burn ward.

I wouldn't worry about longevity with them.

Perhaps not with the current ones, but I had a first gen Intel X-25m crap out on me (in a very ungraceful manner, no less) after a few years worth of use. I think the fact that they've switched to a third party controller is very telling.

Ingrown toenail surgery. by Recarein WTF

[–]aldenhg -1 points0 points ago

I had to get an ingrown toenail operated on. The only issue was that the infection was so bad it had caused damage to the nerves, rendering local anesthetic ineffective. So there my doctor was, cutting into my big toe and me feeling everything. He got about 1/4 of the way done before he stopped because he could tell how much it hurt. I ended up in a general surgeon's office and got put under completely for it. Now I have a squareish toenail that has a little spike of toenail that grows up out of the side of it. I guess he missed some of the nailbed.

Bike to work day 2012 by aidslifecyclechrisbin bicycling

[–]aldenhg 0 points1 point ago

I did, but then again I do 98% of the time. Days like this are a good way to make cycling seem like a viable option for those who think they're too out of shape, but they also put a lot of people who don't cycle commute every day on the road. They're slow and aren't familiar with the flow of the road or proper manners (i.e not riding side by side on a narrow bike path). I commend them on taking the first step, but I also want to yell at everyone who decides to make a sudden turn without signaling and looking over their shoulder first.

I think you need to calm down on the consumer aggro there, mate. There's no reason to shit all over things other people like just because you don't like them.

Why I hate applying for jobs. by ColdCaulkCraigin funny

[–]aldenhg 2 points3 points ago

Connections really are everything. I applied to job after job and got nothing for months, only to one day be house sitting for my parents and a family friend calls asking for my information so he can hire me as temporary labor. Jobless, I take the job with gusto and a few months later I'm the facilities manager for a small colocation company.

Mind you, I'm a recent electrical engineering grad. The job market for recent grads is really bad because a lot of people with tons of job experience were laid off in the recent economic crapiness and are willing to take jobs at starting pay because the market is tight. The job I have isn't directly related to my schooling, but it's a good job.
