I am the product of an incestuous relationship (my parents are full blooded siblings) and I'm tired of the way society views people like me. Should I get over it or should I start calling people out for making rude comments? by helpmeout89in AskReddit

You're a moron. A mongrel is more likely to be carrying hidden genetic 'diseases' than an inbred. Problem with inbreeding is those traits are more likely to be expressed in phenotype. If your worried about recessive disease its healthy mongrels that are a bigger threat than healthy inbreds. If disease is expressed than you can discourage the inbred from breeding like a good eugenicists- btw don't forget to say that to anyone else who has any sort of major genetic 'disease'.

I saw an academic study where they estimated that something like 1/4 of marriages in the ptolemaic period of ancient Egypt were brother sister marriages. I think it was very common throughout ancient Egyptian history and was repeated over many generations. This is the longest civilization in human history. I think people wildly exaggerate the overall detrimental effects of inbreeding partly because the potential consequences can be literally life and death. Also there's the reality behind all taboos- tapping into non-rational emotions of fear, disgust and ecetera is very effective in discourages the behavior and almost completely shuts off any other possibilities. The largely irrational taboo has an overall positive effect by discouraging inbreeding but like all taboos it comes at a cost- a cost people in your situation feel most acutely.

I'm kind of disappointed with many of the responses here that dismiss the stigma surrounding your situation- I'm sure the implied rejection you have felt has been pretty extreme- not to mention some direct rejection. Posters here are just ignorant of how it feels to be degraded by society in that way. Some here do raise a good point about people largely not caring and being too selfish to care that much- it's true most people just don't care that much. Even when they are mocking and negative it's usually just salacious gossip to them- they actually don't care that much even when it seems they do. It's just entertainment for them. For you it probably obsesses and devastates you, for them they won't think about it again in couple of weeks. Sure you know it already but there's no need to share anything about with the vast majority of people out there and it's probably for the best given their mentality. You don't owe them anything. If its a person you know and trust and who's open minded, can be good to share and educate them, everyone else it's not worth it. If they don't know you well enough they will just label you. Their bias is largely irrational and very deep rooted. Who needs that stigma? The most rational and eloquent argument will only shift their perspective a bit, while you have to bear the burden of the stigma. IMO it's really not worth it in most cases.

As cliche as it sounds, if you can learn to deal with this and not let it poison how you feel about people, you reallly will be a stronger better person than most. Keep your head up.

Don't forget to take the realities of your riding into account (i.e. the left candidate who has a chance of winning)- probably the most important factor IMO.

Reddit, can I argue a case for my suicide? Or, is it always the wrong decision? by 142536in self

[–]achilles 0 points1 point ago

Often weed can increase obsessive worry which makes it quite different than alcohol. It can give a different perspective though. Indica strains are much more relaxing, more than likely you tried a Sativa strain which is more of a mental stimulant- not necessarily good if you're already obsessing over negative things.

It may sound lame but I really second the suggestion to exercise (and eating healthy too) if you're feeling depressed or anxious. Really incredible the effect it can have if you do it regularly, worth making time for it.

Is a 100 hour videogame ever worth 100 hours of Tolstoy? (Does the question even make sense?) by johnbrindlein ludology

[–]achilles 0 points1 point ago

I hear you but I think your average older engineer would still think Tolstoy holds more value for most.

If you asked a bunch of highly educated and 'cultured' older folk what is a better use of most peoples time- 100 hours of Tolstoy or Chess- I think the great majority would go with the literature.

Whisky stones for wine?? by achillesin wine

[–]achilles[S] 0 points1 point ago

Actually I tend to prefer room temp for reds as well, but I do find that a slight chill can improve the flavor of some wine. This is why something like the stones are a bit appealing to me actually...ordinarily don't prechill the wine but occasionally find myself wanting the wine slightly chilled if there is some undesirable harshness to it.

Got into a domestic dispute with a black man. I got stupid and screamed, "I'm White who do you think is going to prison!". He fucking went away immediately and now I feel like shit. (throwaway) by Inviroin self

You could have screamed, 'I have a pussy, you have a penis, who do you think is going to jail'. Strangely he probably wouldn't taken offense and you wouldn't have felt shitty about it.

Two suggestions off the top of my head.

How about starting a small business in something related to your area. Treat it as a side project for now but it could be a future career. You get to do something productive and something that will hopefully get you out of your shell and mixing with other folk again.

The other thing that comes to mind is treating socializing with your peers as a project of sorts. Fine you don't immediately connect with your colleagues right now because you have very different experiences, just view it as an interesting challenge rather than a barrier- while staying mostly sincere make an effort to understand them, don't avoid them assuming you have nothing in common, probably have more in common then you imagine.
