May day has a long history; it is a pretty big annual event in Europe but is evidently less well known in the US.

The post is probably posted by someone in the Seattle Anarchist scene as they are one of the few communities that actively celebrate in the US the event outside of unions. There is also some additional momentum behind May Day this year thanks to the previous energy of the occupy movement.

There are plenty of 'riots' for actual causes in Canada. In recent memory: the G20 in Toronto and the Olympics in Vancouver (yes, there are actual causes associated with the Olympics). The irony is that when protesters riot they are called "nihilist" despite the fact that they are rioting because they believe in something. The Stanley Cup riots and the St Patrick's Riot are truly nihilistic; it stands for nothing. And the ugliest truth is that much of our contemporary 'culture' stands for nothing.
