Man who beheaded, ate fellow passenger on Greyhound bus in Canada wins bid to leave grounds of mental hospital - NY Daily News by W_Edwards_Demingin news

Theoretically, yes; I don't think there would be anything to gain by locking away people if their criminal desires could be taken away. But I'm not sure altering something that specific is possible, short of lobotomizing them.

Well, personality disorders and mental disorders are considered very differently in the legal realm. Sociopaths and psychopaths are aware of what they're doing, why they're doing it (to an extent), and the consequences of their actions. There's a degree of responsibility that can't be assigned to the likes of someone with schizophrenia, for example. I believe prisons should be used for people whose criminal actions are pathological, as the very nature of sociopaths makes it difficult to rehabilitate them. You can't take away their violent urges the same way you can someone who isn't criminal but committed criminal acts during a psychotic break.

Insane doesn't mean "does bad things." Insanity means they have no control over their actions due to a disease of the brain. Psychoses and personality disorders are not the same thing and hold wildly disproportionate levels of responsibility.

Look at this interview with Jeffrey Dahmer and this interview with a schizophrenic patient. Dahmer is calm, collected, organized. He knows what he did, why he did it, the consequences of his actions, and experiences reality exactly the same as you or me. The schizophrenic patient is all over the map, spills her coffee while she talks and shows no sign that she knows she's done it, her thoughts are completely unorganized. She has very little or no control over herself.

That's the difference between sanity and insanity. Dahmer isn't insane and that's why he didn't get out of the death penalty. David Berkowitz tried to plead insanity and failed. If you look at Vince Li's background, you see someone who lived the majority of his life normally and healthily and then, out of nowhere, beheaded and ate some guy he didn't know on a bus. That's the definition of a psychotic episode. Sociopaths show a steady progression up to their "big" crimes.

If one day you suddenly get an irresistible urge to murder and eat someone, yeah, you're more than likely insane. If it's discovered that you did it to prove a point or that you started killing small animals and eating them raw then steadily progressed to killing and eating a person, you're going to prison and probably put to death, because that progression shows a level of responsibility insane people don't have.

No, we shouldn't abolish prisons, because your assumption is wrong. Every person who kills or maims someone isn't mentally ill in the same sense as Vince Li is. Sociopaths experience reality just like you or me, people who are actually mentally ill do not.

Look at this way: Vince Li and Jeffrey Dahmer both killed and ate people. Vince Li did it because he actually thought the voice of God was telling him to do so. That voice was as much a part of his perception of reality as the effect of gravity. He killed someone on a bus in broad daylight with no concern for the people around him - that's something someone having a psychotic episode does. He had no sense that what he was doing was wrong.

Jeffrey Dahmer had abandonment and power issues - issues in his personality. He didn't experience anything that wasn't actually there. He killed people because he didn't want them to leave, ate them because he wanted total power over his victims and wanted to make them a part of him. He also did this in secret. He knew what getting caught would mean, knew what people would think of what he was doing and knew the consequences. None of those things can be said for Vince Li or people who have actual mental illnesses that lead them to criminal acts.

No, his schizophrenia was undiagnosed and he's 40 so who knows how long he's been festering in his own mind

YSK there's an internet channel that airs documentaries 24/7 for free. by ---in YouShouldKnow

[–]Vietrmx 2 points3 points ago

Hey guys, creator of the channel here. Thanks for the interest! Love servin' documentaries to y'all.

If you wanna suggest some documentaries to add to the playlist directly, you can head over to http://docusynchtube.tumblr.com/ask (no registration required) and suggest something. I'm regularly looking up stuff on my own to add and I'm usually in the room, so it's a pretty organic experience. Also, mods can add videos too, so if I (DocuTube) am not on, you can ask one of them to add something for you. Thanks!

Real-time conversation with people watching the same thing. Plus, looking at a list (for me) has always been sort of...meaningless. You could open every single link, but I usually end up cherry picking. With streams you can just pop in and see if there's something on that you like, and if you do, you can watch it with other people or save it for later.

If it's not a legal issue on youtube then it's not a legal issue on synchtube.

There was a time where Chrome users had major issues with the site but they've since fixed that. The site's gotten a lot better recently.

Thanks!! I appreciate the exposure. I'll look through those documentaries and add a few interesting ones. If you have any in particular in mind, let me know.

Not really, but I suppose I could make a tumblr page or something where people could make suggestions. Synchtube doesn't have many features so it's a bit difficult to convey information easily.

Feel free to reply to this comment or email me at docusynchtube@gmail.com with suggestions for the playlist. If it's 20+ minutes and interesting, I'll add it! Preferably in english, though subtitles are acceptable.

Edit: Also you should totally sign up for synchtube and give the channel a favorite, it helps a bit. Also it's fun talking to people while you're watching!

Edit2: I made a Tumblr with an ask page (registration is not required) for people who want to suggest documentaries. Don't worry about overlap, synchtube can automatically delete duplicates! http://docusynchtube.tumblr.com/ask
