How do you guys feel about not responding to text/IM messages? by an0nymouzin introvert

[–]Up2Eleven 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes it bothers me, but I think of it this way: I refuse to have an electronic leash. I keep my phone on silent most of the time and I've had friends pester me to get on some kind of IM or chat program, but whenever I've had one I always set myself to unavailable or invisible. I just don't like being in the middle of something and then having some message pop up bugging me for a response. If I'm writing or otherwise need to focus on something, I can't have stuff popping up all the time.

My philosophy is that humanity made it this far without all this gadgetry, and before texting and instant messaging came along, we had answering machines which we used to filter calls and not answer the ones we didn't want to. Since we can't filter whether or not we get a text (other than blocking a person completely), then we have to be our own filters. And it's our time, and our lives. We're allowed to make decisions about how and when we communicate.

With a text, it comes through whether you want it or not. When someone sends it, they feel entitled to a response. I feel that I'm not entitled to anyone else's attention. I can request it, but if they refuse, who am I to pester them? Unless it a function of their job or something, I'll just leave them alone. I tend to expect the same consideration, but a lot of people don't seem to see it that way and take it as an affront if I'm not quick to respond.

I would kind of like to create a text auto-reply that I can toggle that says something like:

"Hey, I got your text but cannot respond at the moment. Possible reasons include:

My phone is turned off

My phone is dead

I am in the shower

I am at work

I am asleep

I am focusing on something which requires my undivided attention

I just don't feel like it

Please be patient and do not take this personally. I will likely get back to you in time."

I've lived in and around Phoenix off and on for most of my life. With one exception, every encounter I have had with the cops they start off yelling at the top of their lungs and shout me down whenever I try to answer their questions. I remain composed and compliant but they act like completely inhuman raging pit bulls. Completely irrational and often insulting. I am as respectful as possible to them, yet it has no effect. Why do you think this is? Do you believe there may be a lot of steroid abuse among Phoenix PD?

It's been long enough that there's no such thing as spoilers for Firefly. If anyone hasn't seen it yet...shame on them! :)

Your HONEST thoughts about Diablo 3? What do you like/don't like? by peacefulcommunistin Diablo

I really enjoy it. The only thing I wish was different so far is that the areas are not randomly generated like they were in diablo 2.

Honest question about Phoenix area school districts.... by Pedro471in phoenix

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point ago

Not gonna speak for the teacher, but would like to throw in my two cents.

Granted, it's been a long time since I was in school, but I went to a middle school and a high school in Scottsdale. The high school was a spoiled jock haven and the middle school seemed really disinterested in the students in general. The teachers (with a couple of exceptions) seemed to be there because it was a job and that's it.

I could be a billionaire and I still wouldn't have kids. My reasons are entirely independent from money. I like my quiet, my freedom, and all the other things I get by not having kids.

When did you know/find out you were an introvert? by Gekkostatein introvert

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point ago

I always knew I was rather introverted, but I didn't really grasp it as a well defined concept until a couple of weeks ago, when I noticed several articles about it here on reddit and found that they described me very accurately.

Learn from those who are also introverted and understand what it's like.

You're not messed up and it's not an aberration.

There's a difference between introversion and anxiety, however. You may not be introverted but just have anxiety. Or, you may be an introvert that also has anxiety.

Introverts don't fear social situations, we just need to recharge afterwards, and tend to do our best interacting one on one.

I was just looking into that, but apparently age discrimination is rampant in that field and if you're over 40, no one wants to hire you. I'm 42 and would have really liked to get into it.

Kill advertising, end corporate personhood, preserve nature, take away all the loud flashy bullshit, eliminate copyright and let all good works be public domain and let them be improved upon, find something other than currency as a means of exchange, mandate honesty.

Does any other INTP have a sense of megalomania when talking to some people? by NehemiahMin INTP

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point ago

For me it's not so much a feeling of superiority as it is a confusion of why other people don't put things together that seem obvious to me. I'm thinking. "It's right there, how can they not see it?"

I drive fast, yet courteously. I let people in, use my signal, all of that. I also drive strategically, always analyzing conditions to predict how I can get to a place more efficiently.
