It is x-posted at The eXile as well.

I just finished reading this book. It may possibly be the best scifi book I've ever read. Robert Heinlein apparently thought so as well. by geekisthenewcoolin scifi

I always wondered if the Moties were an allegory for what humans would do to the universe with enough access.

Last year the best thing I saw, among many many gems, was a pre Gutenberg Malleus Malefecarnum, though all of the incunabula stalls were fantastic.

True, I think one of his roommates, who used to also be one of my roommates probably informed him of that already, as he is strong with the Star Wars Bible. I think he was just taking artistic license and adding in some details that make sure people know the white unicorn is Luke, since detail wise the Vader unicorn got way more attention so that kind of adds balance to it graphically. I don't think he was envisioning an exact depiction of either of the actual duels. That said I will still break his balls and see what he says. His super heroic minimalism shirts are a good time too, here is a bunch of his general graphic design on flickr if you are interested. Jonah has a very odd perspective on things, and he ritualistically abuses puns. http://www.flickr.com/photos/57901223@N00/sets/72157605531818219/

One of my friends designed that. I am sitting in his living room. He is Biotwist on Deviant Art. He has some other designs up on threadless, and a few on design by humans the last I checked for tshirts, and a bunch of strange graphics available as prints and phone/computer decals.

A Glimpse Into the Genius that is JK Rowling by [deleted]in writing

Many an English lit grad student earned their MA due to fucking impenetrable books, in some of which the authors were openly and actively fucking with their readers. I'd bet a signifigant percentage of lit people with graduate degrees would have had nothing to write their thesis and dissertations about if it were not for the likes of Pynchon and Joyce.

He makes the whole Southern Renaissance worth it. As I Lay Dying is profoundly moving, a stream of consciousness work with multiple, conflicting, and sometimes adversarial narrators is no mean feat. I've only come across one or two other books in that vein that can keep up.

She tells a fine story, and knows how to write to her audience especially as that audience changes age demographic. As a popular bestselling writer, shes among the best recently, even if she does not deserve to be the most well paid writer in the history of the written word in my humble opinion, but she should not have to worry about feeding her kids week to week either. If you want to judge mass market popular literature against critically acclaimed literary fiction, well you can't, you just won't get anywhere. Her plotting and outlining technique isn't bad at all, especially with so many characters and such a long time line to attempt to remain consistent to, seems like notes like that would be a minimum necessary to keep it all straight during planning, and is less a sign of 'genius' as a sign of being competent and organized while trying to tell a very long story. Personally, I see her greatest accomplishment as getting a huge number of kids world wide to Read A Whole Book, and then Read Another. She probably did more for child literacy and fostering a respect for literature than RIF ever could have dreamed.

Bill O'Reilly Threatens To Quit If Higher Taxes For Millionaires Are Enacted by Mind_Virusin politics

[–]UnboughtStuffedDogs -1 points0 points ago

I love that argument; "Well if you tax me more I'll just work less, why strive and produce?" Really? Awesome. If you haven't heard there is a real shortage of demand and labor hours, in any other field besides BillO's, I would hope two or three people get work replacing the person who made enough to be so comfortable that they can just shrug off taking home 70 or so percent of every ten thousand in that higher marginal bracket. Everyone wins.

40$ cases of water at Best Buy during hurricane. X post WTF by UnboughtStuffedDogsin Anarchism

$40.00 for case of water at a Best Buy in NJ! by zxiin WTF

[–]UnboughtStuffedDogs 0 points1 point ago

It does, the state of emergency makes it price gouging, as in price gouging laws are in effect during a state of emergency, and not other times. Cases of things almost never cost the same as that many of an individually packaged retail item, anywhere, for anything, and this is at a store that sells electronics on every day of the year that isn't a hurricane. And as you said to derail everything else I said, this isn't about me, even though I qualified the statement by saying since it seems most people will pay that price for a single bottle of water that it seems to be a reasonable price discovery for one bottle of water. If you think people will line up to buy 20 bottles of water from you at a clip at that price when they don't think their services are going to be disrupted at home due to a state of emergency, I wish you luck making the payments on your business loan. Now I'm going to go yell at myself in the mirror for being drawn into this inane conversation in the first place.

$40.00 for case of water at a Best Buy in NJ! by zxiin WTF

[–]UnboughtStuffedDogs -2 points-1 points ago

For a single bottle of water, price discovery seems to make that somewhat reasonable, even though I personally wouldn't buy 1.69 water bottles ever unless I was about to dehydrate and die. Cases of water at 40 dollars is insane under any circumstance, and no one would pay it unless they were in panic mode for a state of emergency, which once again makes the case for price gouging. If they are taking water out of cases that aren't meant for individual retail sale and selling them in this bizarre thought experiment you've come up with, I still wouldn't buy them, but others might, and then they can spend whatever margin they are adding to their profit when they have to renegotiate with their very pissed off wholesaler, or fight them in court. That's all I've got, there is no reasonable situation in which selling bottles of water at $40 a case in a hurricane is ethical, or even good business.

$40.00 for case of water at a Best Buy in NJ! by zxiin WTF

[–]UnboughtStuffedDogs -2 points-1 points ago

A case of something in most situations is not the same product as the individual retail items. Usually, this is why the cased bottles/widgets/whatever have a different SKU, or are marked Not For Individual Retail Sale, so stores do not break them up and piece them out to widen their margin. Yes, the individual retail bottles do come to the store in cases, but they will not be marked that they aren't for individual sale, and that case costs the store more wholesale than ones meant to be sold as a case, and your wholesaler calls you up to shit on your head if they find out you are piecing out units meant to be sold as a case, because you are taking money out of their pocket.

$40.00 for case of water at a Best Buy in NJ! by zxiin WTF

[–]UnboughtStuffedDogs -3 points-2 points ago

Well then if they suddenly start selling it during a state of emergency at prices that are significantly higher than anywhere else sells cases of water, all the more grounds for a price gouging complaint. I have never seen cases of water for sale anywhere where price = quantity x individual bottle retail price. You could get a case of cheap beer for half the price of that water, which might be why the liquor store lines were so long today.
