I am absolutely floored. by St4nd4rdin writing

That's why I chose Canadian! At first they were Iranian terrorists but I read the first scene back to myself and said "Ugh, these guys again." Then I thought who would be unexpected? Canadians! They are not bumbling idiots either, they're super elite commando style guys.

Marduk isn't a made up word. He was the patron god of Babylon.

What about, "The Word of Marduk"

A key plot element of my book is the origins of written language and it developing hand in hand with the Marduk mythos.

Maybe when I'm done with the first revision I'll post some sample chapters and ask r/writing to help me focus test a new title. Catacombs of Marduk? The Tomb of Marduk? Marduk and the Deathly Hallows? I'll figure something out.

I just took them all out! I'm not going to add 14,000 adverbs to get my book up to 70,000 words!

Excellent points. The genre is sort of historic action/adventure. Think James Rollins or Clive Cussler. Definitely not literary and while YA wasn't the intended audience with a couple tweeks it could work.

I imagine I'm going to self publish. I had aspirations of finding an agent and seeing about corporate publication but this is my first book, I imagine I'd get laughed out of the door.

"Now Kiko will live forever in the body of the happy frog!"

"Yay!"

"Fuck you!"

I laughed so hard I was crying.

Time to check in. Who here is working on their first novel? Let's discuss our books! by spreriin writing

Some days yes. Other days I sit in front of my computer for a couple hours before I'm able to put anything down. It's like pulling frickin teeth sometimes!

I have been writing for three months now and I recently hit about 30,000 words.

My book is adventure fiction. It takes place in Iraq and follows a grad student archaeologist from Minnesota and his faculty adviser. The bad guys are a team of Canadian mercenaries hired by and oil company to destroy a historical site so they can continue expanding their oil field.

I'm writing a novel and I'm looking for a core group of people to help me review it. by St4nd4rdin LitWorkshop

Let me give you some more context on the book, that might help.

It's a adventure fiction book along the lines of James Rollins or Clive Cussler. Most of those books have an adventure loving protagonist and a supporting sidekick type guy. This book focuses more on a character that wants nothing to do with the adventure but is dragged along regardless.

I agree that it's not the most attention grabbing. I'm tossing around the idea of a more dynamic prologue set in bronze age Iraq.

Thanks so much for the feedback, it helps a ton!

I'm going to offer the dissenting opinion here. I say don't write for a while. Don't think about it.

Do some of the things that inspire you, and if you're anything like me then in no time at all all of the stories and dialogue will build up and demand release.

Drink a glass of wine (or scotch and soda, or whatev) and put it down.

Hybrid skillset having trouble getting a job. by St4nd4rdin jobs

[–]St4nd4rd[S] 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps I shouldn't have said technical jobs. I'll try to elaborate.

My experience is in medium to large scale server deployment. I coordinated everything from the sale to support which means I got experience in vendor management, logistics, supply chain, project management, customer service, and service fulfillment. I wore a lot of hats but no single hat for long enough to become an expert.

The question I should have asked is "Is this sort of 'Jack of all Trades' skill set valued by employers?"

Perhaps more importantly, how should I be marketing myself on my resume and in interviews?

After 3+ months of searching, I FINALLY found a job. Guess what my Christian cousin wants to give credit to...? (FB post) by Sutiein atheism
