What if Frank Miller wrote "The Avengers"? by fluffysellscarsin comicbooks

[–]Spiderveins 1 point2 points ago

He's been on a sharp downward trajectory. His newer work is a cruel parody of what he used to be capable of. He's lost his damned mind these last few years. Check out Holy Terror if you don't believe me.

Why don't politicians realize that if we legalize marijuana, that is not the same as condoning the use? by Shaggy57in politics

There exist vast swathes of busybodies which believe that law is the set of things they imagine nice people everywhere disapprove of.

No. It's really just creepy pinheads doing that.

Kind of like how amendment 1 only made its way onto the ballot as a part of Art Pope's statewide power-grab?

New threat announced: suicide bombers may wear rectally inserted "difficult-to-detect" explosive devices on planes. Can we collectively foresee where this is going? by this-color-is-bluein politics

[–]Spiderveins 7 points8 points ago

Did they really just announce that people may conceivably try to sneak explosives up their assholes? Was I wrong in assuming this to be common knowledge?

At some point you just have to accept that perfect physical security is impossible, short of hooking us all up on life support in a prison somewhere. This is a cash grab built on fear-culture security theater, nothing more.

Welfare drug tests: FL Governor's family has 70 percent ownership of shares in Solantic, a health-care corporation Scott co-founded in 2011 that provides drug testing and services to Medicaid patients. by IMprollyWRONGin politics

He owns no shares because his family sold them, for a higher price than could have been negotiated without guaranteed state business, after they got caught.

Yes, after he got caught he sold the company, which still managed to not make much money. He still tried to personally cash in by making life that much more bullshit for people in his state.

Hey. This law made the company far more valuable as an asset. It was in the works before it was sold. This is still corruption, and it still enriched the family. Your astro-turf logic is weak.

ELI5: Why, when someone dies from something that does not permanently damage anything vital, they can not be "restarted" or brought back to life? by MyUsernameIsJudgein explainlikeimfive

[–]Spiderveins 1 point2 points ago

The cell structure will degrade very quickly. The geometry of the connections between neurons has to be maintained constantly, and that costs energy. No energy, and things fall apart.

ELI5: Why, when someone dies from something that does not permanently damage anything vital, they can not be "restarted" or brought back to life? by MyUsernameIsJudgein explainlikeimfive

[–]Spiderveins 2 points3 points ago

The problem is that our definition of "vital" gets fuzzier when you talk about the brain. You can go in and kill a neuron at random, and the odds are nothing bad will come of it. Kill a patch of thousands of neurons and things might start glitching. Kill millions or billions all at once and you are irrepairably dead.

What is true at normal scale is also true at the cellular level. You can crack an egg, but you can't reasonably uncrack one, and you can't unkill millions of neurons that have died of oxygen starvation. The eggs are cracked and entropy always wins in the end.

It says more about you that you consider a person worthless when you think they have nothing to offer you. It says you place no intrinsic worth on human life. It is sociopathy dressed up as armchair economics.

This kind of thinking is how the rest of us flag the Patrick Batemans of the world.

A species is actually defined as a population of viably interbreeding individuals. If two individuals can produce fertile offspring they are still considered as part of the same species.

90% of the 200,000 to 400,000 prostitutes working in Spain are doing so against their will. by IRSgimliin worldnews

[–]Spiderveins 1 point2 points ago

So we should just give up and follow our guts?

If you knew anything about statistics you would know that working with messy and incomplete data is not a serious problem as long as you are careful and honest in your sampling methods.

Just throwing out big dramatic numbers and hoping they strike an emotional cord regardless of statistical validity can do far more harm than good. You can end up blundering your way into a problem whose complexities have completely eluded you, and hurting the people you intened to help. Welcome to the world of evidence-based thinking!

[–]Spiderveins 7 points8 points ago

Gathering accurate numbers is the first step in trying to solve it. Misleading statistics actually make it harder to fix anything. Bad numbers and bad facts get in the way more than they help, and all the emotions in the world won't change that.

If you want to help these people a good first step is finding out how much of what is said about them is bullshit.

Capitalism. by streeter5000in pics

[–]Spiderveins 0 points1 point ago*

Absolutely. If mining interests, private armies and state troops had access to the tools and tech the modern billionaire or general enjoys there would never have been a question of fighting back. The fight for basic dignity in the modern workplace would have been strangled in the crib.

As it was that almost happened anyway.

Capitalism. by streeter5000in pics

[–]Spiderveins 0 points1 point ago

We're pretty much on the same page then. I just think that corporatism is a natural evolution of unrestrained capitalism. If the State didn't exist, corporate power would build one for itself. You'll notice how private detective firms and other hired goons played such a prominent role in Company Town life during the West Virginia mine wars of the 20s and 30s.
