It's not impersonal. :) Teachers receive a lot of gifts. So buying her something she can use in her day-to-day life is actually more meaningful than it sounds. I know that in my first year I received so many desk knickknacks that I couldn't possibly find a home for them all. But gift cards can go straight into her purse and the next time she's had a hard day and is driving by Jamba Juice, she'll remember that she has a card and be thankful. :)

And, also, this isn't a "gift" in the most literal sense, but the thing I treasure the most from students and their families are cards and letters. I have a folder full of those that I pull out and read from time to time. So if you want to personalize the gift card more, add a nice note to it. I'm sure she'll love it. :)
